As a British person, not having scene any Doctor Who seems somewhat sacriligious! So with David Tennant set to return to the role before Ncuti Gatwa takes over, now felt the best time to jump in!

Today we rapidly approach the end of David Tennant’s tenure as the 10th Doctor with the 2nd of 4 2009/10 Doctor Who Specials!!! In a Mars base the inhabitants are being infected by a mysterious water creature which takes over its victims. The Doctor is thrust into the middle of this catastrophe knowing a larger one is waiting around the corner.

  1. One of the best episodes of Doctor Who. My favorite David Tennant episode. It really says a lot about the timelords, when they travel alone. Here he was becoming the Master. I wish we could have had an episode with the Timelord Victorius. It would have been a great story..

  2. This is a good one-and in best Doctor Who tradition-doesn't explain exactly what the menace is…. just how it's infected them and the end result.

Kinda wish this had been Tennant's Swan Song instead of what's to come…….. Gah-even Bernard Cribbins couldn't save it. Think I'll skip your reaction to it-because I don't want to be reminded of any of it

  3. I love people’s reactions to the end of this episode. David Tennant’s 10th Doctor just makes you want to see him succeed, to actually save them… but then, once they’re back on Earth and everything calms down, the realisation of what he’s actually done hits you. Nothing can stop him from doing whatever he thinks is “right”, to make the universe “better”, and isn’t that just terrifying.

All hail the Time Lord Victory, the ruler of all Time and Space…

(Side Note: Good on you though. For all the reactions I’ve seen, you’re probably the first to realise that the Doctor really shouldn’t be doing what he’s doing the second he decides to go back and save them.)

Also, I’m assuming you’ll be watching the Sarah Jane Adventures, Season 3 Episode 5 & 6 after this, yeah? Probably should be if my memory is correct?

  4. There is so much to think about with "The Time Lord Victorious"

Something I've said before is that the thing that makes the sequence land so well is that at first he isn't doing anything different to what he normally does, but the longer it goes on, the more you realise something is off, that someting is wrong, and suddenly everything falls apart.

Also you hit the nail on the head with the Master comparison, particularly with something only classic who fans know; in the classic series the master frequently introduced himself with this line "I am the Master, and you will obey me." It's not a direct echo, but the parrallels are there.

  5. Perhaps my favorite episode of Doctor Who.
David Tennant was quite scary. He looked maniacal at one point.
    I love Captain Adelaide Brooke.

    Good reaction! That was fun.

  6. Unfortunately for Planet of the Dead, it was basically a less interesting version of Midnight.

I adore the touch of the first Mars base being named Bowie Base One. Life on Mars indeed.

  7. This hurts my heart. 😢 My Doctor was the 9th and for the Doctor to go from "Coward any day" to "Time Lord Victorious" feels like a death of what made 9 so special.

  8. This is a great ep seeing a fixed point utilised like this and the doctors spiral into a god complex his usual chipper demeanour flipped that gleeful smile to adelaids terrified look. Also adding water to the list of normal things to fear. Great vid final is soon to come.
