  1. If I remember correctly, the female scientist represents a group of scientists who figured out what was happening at Chernobyl and all participated in helping to prevent further catastrophe.

  2. From what I understand as to the dramatization of the story, that mainly refers to the relationships of the people. I know that one guys character was a combo of many men involved. The parts of the story with numbers, measurements, and fall out were kept as close to truthful as known.

  3. The 15'000 that they measured here was also only the max of the gadget they used. So the real number was probably much higher than even that.

Also, the washing to decontaminate is helping, as it washes the contaminated particles off. Same with the people from the hospital, they are theoretically safe to be around, so long as there's no more 'dust' on them. But very little of this was common knowledge at the time. Very nice detail in this episode is Legasov asking for a glass that was turned down for his drink, as there would have been no radioactive dust in it, like in the other glasses that were standing the right way up.

Another interesting fact is, the Swedish nuclear plant found out about it, because the alarms went off on the people that came in for the early shift. Very similar to the scientist in Minsk just opening a window. Terrifying.

  4. The number "8" they measured in Minsk was milliroentgens (0.008 roentgens, not 8 roentgens), so it's a much smaller number, but given the distance between Minsk and the Chernobyl nuclear plant, obviously it was still a lot.

  5. Fun fact: you can see how dramatised this series is by the fact that all three workers who opened the valves didn't die from radiation, two are still alive, and the one who died had an heart attack in 2005, not linked to his experience at Chernobyl in 1986

  6. This is fascinating. Originally, I could not watch beyond episode 1, because I lived my childhood under the twisted stupidity of these people, and their influence in eastern Europe. Communists are by default stupid, arrogant and cruel. What the rest of the world knows and what it was is very very different. The whole communist overthrow was because the working class was tired of the "intelligence" leading. And by working class, I do not mean what Americans generally understand – blue collar people working to support their families. No, what I mean is the lowest of low in society, who do not want to do anything, but feel the rest owe them, just because they "have more". Chernobyl was a direct result of that arrogance and sheer stupidity – they knew it was bad, but they wanted to hide it, because the experts were "bellow" them, and needed to be put in their place. Millions died, because stupid f*cks had stolen power, they wanted to hold on to.

  7. Fun fact, when the Russians recently invaded Ukraine, they made trenches and bunkers in the forests you see around the Chernobyl plant. They had soldiers die of radiation poisoning even after all of these years. The Russian government knew it was dangerous. If Russians were better educated, they would have known it was dangerous. In fact, Ukrainian workers at Chernobyl tried to warn their Russian invaders that it was not safe for them to be there and of course they didn't listen to Ukrainians. They see them as an inferior people. The Russians also stole museum pieces from the Chernobyl accident on display at Chernobyl and took them back home to Russia. There's no telling how many people have been irradiated because of their stupidity. It's one of the main reasons the Russians were pushed out of northern Ukraine. They could not set up FOB's around Chernobyl thanks to all the radiation.

  8. If you think this us purely a soviet/communist thing, in the UK news recently was a problem with the Post Office computer systems. It kept losing money, and about 700 post office staff were prosecuted for theft.
Fujitsu who made the computer system knew it was happening. The government ministers knew it was happening, but everyone who complained was told they were the only ones who had complained.
It happened 1999 – 2015 and it's only finally being dealt with this year.

  9. It is so crazy how the soviets tried to cover up every piece of information. I was born 1989 in east Germany (GDR). My physics teacher once told us a story about that. Chernobyl happened when he was at his first year as a teacher in our school. As a physics teacher they had one or two dosimeters in school. One or two days after the accident they noticed a little increase in radiation and just a few moments later the Stasi(like the KGB from east Germany) came to the school collected the dosimters and left without saying anything. So nothing to see and nothing to know.

  10. This series was a perfect depiction of why the Soviet system, and communism in general, simply does not work. Where you needed leaders with expertise who obtained their position through merit they instead had yes-men and toadies who obtained their positions by being party loyalists.

  11. I strongly recommend watching the Chernobyl podcast. They where done the day after the episode was released and had the creater of the series on it for all episodes. They talk about each episode without giving any spoilers, very good listen imo and well worth the extra hour per episode. "The Chernobyl Podcast | Part One | HBO"
Some answers from the podcast are that, They basicly just went in and told them to pack their stuff and leave. And yes it was that easy (they did have all the busses on standby from different cities close by) The chopper that went down actually happend on the 4th day not the first day.
Ty for the great reaction and breakdown.

  12. One thing y’all sort of missed about the scene at the bar was the general sense of paranoia in Russia at the time. Legasov held back from telling the couple anything because he didn’t want to say anything The Party wouldn’t like, he had no way of knowing if that couple were actually people concerned for their safety, or if they were KGB agents sent to watch him. Russians didn’t even have a concept of personal privacy.

  13. 3:38 i can't belive that clothes is still in that basement and still highly radioactive. if you stand there more than a few seconds you get poisoned. i saw videos of people mesuring the enterance of that room… and the number was bad… 2 meters away from the room and it was complitely normal. all the area was cleaned but not that basement… maybe it was cheaper, and ukraine is well… it had money problems long before war
4:15 actually Chernonyl was part of soviet Ukraine… i belive still is(Ukraine)
