Kirk has ultimate power to put any song on my list (within reason), and for our anniversary he decided to teach me about Styx. “Lady” is one of the first power ballads ever written, and its message was so touching I nearly broke down crying here. Also, Dennis DeYoung’s vocals are AMAZING!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Styx for the first time, performing “Lady”.

I just saw them live last summer. They still sound perfect
Come sail away.
This was one of parents favorite songs as well
The fact that Tommy Shaw and James Young are doing HIGH harmonies ABOVE Dennis DeYoung is what blows my mind….
Heartless Bastards – Hold Your Head High
Styx in the 70'svand 80's are whole lot better than today's Styx( without DeYoung) by far. DeYoung can still run circles around the current keyboardist and his vocals are still in the stratosphere. You should listen to the studio version of Lady and the remake Lady (95).
I'm not fond of this live performance backing vocals when it breaks @10:50 – off key and the tone of the backing vocals is off….
too many stops.
If you want the ultimate power ballad to react to you need to check out "I'll Never Let You Go" by Steelheart. Prepare to be awed by his vocals.
Well, “Sweetheart “…
We would never had got up at The Stage and play 5 x 45 minute gigs (We called them Youth Dances) at Saturday night:s if We would have analysed every move in Our Faces like You do.
We just went with The Feeling.
If you are going to listen to the album version, skip the Styx II version and go straight to Lady '95. Tommy Shaw was not part of the recording back in 1972 and you miss his amazing vocals.
Rips on the piano, then says, "It's working." 😂
One thing I like so much about older music is the musicianship. The musicians often also played more than one instrument. It was a special time.
First of all, I can't believe that you have never heard this song. It was a huge hit during the 70's, but I guess that was before you were born. Anyway, Dennis DeYoung still tours as a soloist because he and the guys from the band had a falling out. I saw Styx a year ago, and they replaced Dennis with another equally impressive singer and pianist.
I would love to get your cake on Edgar Winter white trash album Tobacco Road
It's too bad Tommy Shaw and Dennis DeYoung didn't share the same vision for STYX. The break up came much too soon.
Tommy needed the auto-tune, he wasn't half the singer DeYoung is. Totally different styles.
This is a live version that's much closer to the sound of the album. The dissonance of the vocals is gone. 🙂 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uR4if4ble1A
Happy anniversary pretty lady!
You’re totally right! The studio version is better!!
I'm curious as to your thoughts on the studio version which, though missing the amazing piano intro in this live one, is so much cleaner and better produced.
Happy belated anniversary! ❤
Tommy Shaw wasn't with the band when it was written, the released version is amazing.
This sound bad compared to the recorded album version. You'll love it❤
Id like to see your reaction and piano analysis of our wedding song: Making Love out of Nothing at all, by Air Supply. We looked up the pianos sheet music for that and realized the incredible composition it really was!
You've got a few to check out here, too. Maybe check out Come Sail Away, Miss America, Blue Collar Man, and Renegade. Those are the first that come to mind.
Listen to the studio recording as well…..The song works differently. Both are great.
Styx. Some Love Them Or Hate Them.I LOVE Them !!
Kind of a bolero.
Styx, Pink Floyd, Kansas, Moody Blues, etc. I've always considered them as Art Rock due to arrangements appear to be similar to orchestral in nature with Classical influences, though I know most classify them as Progressive Rock. I don't think the latter term does the music justice.
The problem is less one of pitch and more one of balance. Dennis stops singing the melody and starts singing a lower harmony, while someone else sings the higher melody. Unfortunately, the sound engineer didn’t bring the melody forward in this very old recording. I always recommend listening to the studio version first for this and many other reasons. The mix is very often off in a life performance.
It might be better if you comment along with the music.. instead of stopping at so often ..and lose the continuity of the song.try and remember most of us have heard this group for 30 years
Been there there live something you'd not understand nowadays freedom at its finest hower
This was a great performance, especially for the Piano. I think the studio version would knock her socks off vocally. And then she said what I just said.
You must hear the studio version The mixer has lost the beautiful harmonies, His voice drops out when the band starts without his voice carried out in front of the harmony the texture it creates is lost. The instrument work bright little accents throughout the song that are lost in that auditorium. I did not know he played piano so well, It was like Liberace was in the house.
Please, PLEASE do Crystal Ball! You will not regret it! (Definitely the live version with the backing orchestra- one of the best live performances ever!)
They have an amazing catalogue
Really need to hear heavymetal poisoning ❤❤❤
I love how she is so expressive and explains her analogies in a way everyone can understand.
LOVE Styx. I saw them in concert 3 times, and it all started with hearing Lady on the radio. Thank you!
You need to hear Dennis Deyoung sing “Babe”. This one will really touch your heart.
Liz hears LADY!! I saw Styx after the release of Styx II in Schererville, Indiana, at The Wild Goose for $2. Yeah. Lady is what thrust them much more into the mainstream. Dennis DeYoung was and is just astounding. You can just imagine when he was in his absolute prime. XOXO
I grew up with Dennis in the south suburbs of Chicago. Still follow him. His voice is…..amazing!!
Stix is amazing. Would love to hear you take on Steve Perry of Journey, he has an equal outstanding voice.
They played at my sister's high School Driscoll high School in Addison Illinois yep and good band 😎
Elizabeth. You are such a beautiful person as I watched you admire the opening lyrics such as you did. Your facial expressions are as telling as your lovely heart. At that moment, the song and lyrics were only matched by your Eternal Beauty and Resounding Love.
Dennis DeYoung is still a symbol. A timeless vocal personality. Forever a rock superstar/favorite singer. This so reminded me of "Desert Moon".
The first Styx song I remember hearing was "Come Sail Away." Styx ended up being one of my favorite bands when I was a teen, but I always liked their earlier music best. "Lady" was one of my favorites from Styx. By the time they got to the "Kilroy Was Here" album though, they had lost me.
Next? "Gentle on my Mind." So good.
