Thomas Alan Waits (born December 7, 1949) is an American musician, composer, songwriter, and actor. His lyrics often focus on the underbelly of society and are delivered in his trademark deep, gravelly voice. He began in the folk scene during the 1970s, but his music since the 1980s has reflected the influence of such diverse genres as rock, country, Delta blues, opera, vaudeville, cabaret, funk, hip hop and experimental techniques verging on industrial music. Per The Wall Street Journal, Waits âhas composed a body of work thatâs at least comparable to any songwriterâs in pop today. I love Tom Waits. My introduction to him came from a friend who wanted to go see him. It was the mid 70s and he was playing in a little bar in Denver, Colorado. I knew nothing about him.
As my friend and I stood in line on the sidewalk, my friend said, "There he is", and pointed down the street . I looked and all I saw was a bum in a long coat and a beat up hat. I asked my friend if he was behind the bum and my friend said, " No that's him."
Then the bum walked over to the line waiting there, cigarette hanging out of his mouth, and took his hat off. He spun the hat around and showed the bottom of the hat to the people in line.
On the underside of the brim he had made letters with what looked like masking tape. In a circle around the underside it said –

I told my friend we should go somewhere else, but since he drove, we went into the bar. It was one of the best shows I'd ever seen.
And it was just Waits and a guy on a stand-up base, no lights on the stage with one spotlight on Waits.He always had a cigarette in his mouth or in an ashtray on the piano, and there was always a cloud of blue smoke around him.
Later I learned that it was a persona he'd created, but during the show he lived and breathed that persona.
I've seen him a number of times, and always a fantastic show or concert.
In a way there are 3 versions of Tom Waits. The song you reacted to was his younger self, he did a lot of ballads and wrote songs for others. Then he became the seedy sideshow barker/strip club doorman/low life persona. His music shifted from ballads to tales of life on the wrong side of tracks. That period IMHO was the best. If you're interested in that period I'd suggest Small Change, Nighthawks at the Diner or On the Nickel.
His third persona is hard to pin down, he experiments with unusual instruments or even things that aren't instruments, and there's a definite carnival atmosphere about it.
I think my first exposure to him was the movie "Wristcutters: A Love Story"
I always hated that the movie name was so potentially triggering because it's a wonderful heartfelt dramedy. (And it led me into the Jim Jarmusch films like Down by Law.)
The 1985 Tom Waits album "Rain Dogs"
is amazing–one of his best.
He's also been in various movies,
including 1993's "Short Cuts".

Glad you got into Waits. One of the greats, his later stuff when his voice got rougher is what I like more. His album Blue Valentine is a classic. One song on that album is my favorite, Kentucky Avenue. Its story brings people to tears. I was in Tokyo once and saw a guy selling sunglasses in a small shop with Tom Waits albums all over the wall. I asked him what was his favorite Waits song and he said, âKentucky Avenue.â

Waits is a performance artist. His character is an aging drunkard. As an example of what an oddity Tom Waits is, in 1987 he co-starred opposite Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep in the film 'Ironweed'. I haven't seen the film in 38 years but I can still quote one of his lines.

Fun fact: The character of Thom Merrilin (gleeman), played by Alexandre Willaume, in the Wheel of Time tv show is based on Tom Waits.

Like others have written before me… This is a glimpse into the mind of a lonely, broken hearted man. Too fragile to be able to accept yet another rejection, he thinks of all the ways he could approach but never does. He builds an unrealistic fantasy about her in his head. So the next time you see a lonely man, don't judge him too harshly.

Definitely not the Tom Waits I grew up with look up Clap Hands and others on the same albulm(s) around 1990 t0 93 I think. Very gravely voice and weird use of percussion! Enjoy! I love watching your reaction to music!

Tom Waits loved to stay in flophouses when touring (He did when he came to Cleveland, Ohio so the rumor says), and was fascinated by society's seedy underbelly. His song "The Piano Has Been Drinking is simple and funny thoughts of a drunken man. . (Editor Diane would love this one. ) He plays small to medium halls and has a very loyal following. Here is the first verse. His songs are varied in subject and most of them are quite the gem.

You should hear "The Piano Has Been Drinking " by him.
Always interesting to see where someone starts with Tom Waits. Because no matter which song you hear first, it is almost in never representative of most of his music because he changed it up so much. No one would hear this and think it is the same guy from "God's Away On Business" or "The Earth Died Screaming" or "Come On Up to the House".

Great content as usual. †I listened quite a bit to Waits and this is one of his best for sure. My personal favorite would be Jersey Girl though, it is also the one I sang to my now wife on our wedding. More of his persona is present there and, in my opinion, his writing genius.
Waits's voice gradually morphed during his first few albums into a much more Louis Armstrong-styled, "bucket of rocks" instrument. This song, from his first album, is very atypical of his oeuvre generally. Much more characteristic are his classic albums Nighthawks at the Diner and Small Change. From those albums, I'd suggest listening to "Emotional Weather Report," "Eggs and Sausage," "Step Right Up," or "Jitterbug Boy."
The one that pulls at your heart is his shortest , done as a solo and also with Crystal Gayle called "Take me home "
