Humans aren’t alone in their ability to teach, but you won’t expect how we first discovered this.

I have a crazy idea…we all learn from online videos like from Scishow … what if we try to teach animals (including ants) with videos, will they learn? Also can animal teachers teach learners from other species ? So many questions….
Anybody with a mama hunting dog and a litter can watch that.
I'm only watching this so YT stops recommending me that terrifying thumbnail 🙃
pretty cool 😀
I feel this ant-example is not a good one. I have seen videos about orca's (killer whales) teaching the youngsters to hunt, where there can be no doubt about it being teaching.
But this is mostly ant A pointing ant A to a source of food, admittedly in a somewhat complicated way. I am having a hard time seeing that as teaching. Nothing was learned really, other than 'at this point in time, there is some food over here'. It is not useful in the long run. If you see an ant-colony as a super organism, it get's even more thin. At least not more than one the cells in your body sacrificing some time for the neighboring cell, but nobody calls that teaching.
I'm of course no scientist or expert, but this feels totally wrong.
Anyone else scroll and think the thumbnail was a Ferengi lol?
I don't know if it's automatically fair to say that an ant personally leading another and has a "cost" to the leading ant. The individuals fundamental goal is not reproduction or survival, it's to protect the colony at all costs. If the ant is leading another ant to food, it's not for the other ant, it's for the queen, and therefore, for it's own goals.
This suggests that we as humans are just at the tiny beginning of understanding other animals
This is nothing. My husky and I have this sort of relationship. She taught me to give her treats every single time she screams at me. She's a harsh teacher. Take that, science!
wow ,some human teachers dont even meet the criteria scientists set for teaching
I’m not surprised at all. Please don’t kill ants, trap them live and take them outside if you must!
And for the love of whatever entity you worship, stop eating animals and products of their exploitation!
Orcas!!!!! Their is a pod of orcas that teach their young how to hunt using beaching and they don’t let the young do it until the adults think they are sufficiently skilled to do it!!!
I don't understand why the existence of a pheromone trail as a learning aid would be evidence against teaching in rock ants. We use teaching aids all the time and I honestly can't imagine how a modern education would be possible without one
Did I misinterpret this part of the video? I felt that the implication was that a teaching aid would not support an argument in favor of teaching behavior
It is interesting to learn about the ants, but come on, most mammals teach their young, including hunting, danger management, language, and who knows what else, the idea that an ant is the first animal teacher recognized by science is ludicrus.
Go Go Sci Show
<Engagement boosting comment>
I thought bees teach too with dancing
I used to feel bad about wanting to spend time inside a lot because the weather outside is either too hot or too cold but then I started reflecting on how animals are when they find a barn, or an abandoned house and they also take advantage of going inside and getting out of the weather. now I don't feel so bad about it
Sci show needs to talk about Ecosia they are a search engine that plants trees
Watch out with your classifications. That last definition just unclassified the entire American educational system. What are we supposed to call those once knows as "teachers" now? Oh, yeah. Babysitters.
every time I hear 'scientists thought humans were the only animals who can do a thing!', at this point I just roll my eyes cos that just means they haven't learned enough about the world yet.
go ants!
wait until these researchers discover dogs…
So there’s no need for an advanced brain to teach.
I read somewhere that bluefin tuna do also
Thanks for the cool video with a decent sponsor
In this episode: I learned to not create definitions that artificially favor Human achievements. Or, I already wasn't so full of my species as to ever allow it to happen in the first place, interesting…
Human hubris is probably talked about all over the Milky Way by beings of both superior intelligence and wisdom. Please, grow the F up Humanity; you act like a petulant child.
