The 16th standalone entry in the legendary Final Fantasy series marks a darker turn for the RPG franchise, with a complex tale of revenge, power struggles and unavoidable tragedy.

Final Fantasy XVI reimagines the series’ iconic summons as Eikons. These deadly creatures are housed within Dominants, men and women who inherit their immense power at birth – whether they like it or not.

Eikons are the most powerful beings in Valisthea, a land where six powerful realms have emerged thanks to the power of the Mothercrystals. The aether provided by these towering mountains of crystal powers the magicks that have allowed these nations to thrive for many years — but now a mysterious Blight threatens to disrupt their uneasy alliance.

Play as Clive Rosfield, First Shield of Rosaria and guardian of his younger brother Joshua, the Dominant of the Eikon Phoenix, in this epic action RPG from a team of Final Fantasy veterans.

  1. People love to mention that we haven't had a classic turn based FF since FF10, making it sound like the gap between 10 and 16 is huge, when the reality is that 11 and 14 are both MMO, making them essentially spin offs, and I'd argue ff12 still fits that classic FF feel. They used to be turn based, but they mostly always had some spin to it, to differentiate them from one another.

My point is, I disagree that turn based is a thing of the past when it comes to FF. Even 13 and 15 still had elements of the older games (gameplay wise). 16 is very different.

Apparently the game hasn't been selling too well in Japan, so I guess they also miss the typical JRPG feel..? (Not gonna lie, that gives me some hope we'll get a more classic FF at some point 😅)

Anyway, I'm not gonna hate on the game just because it's basically an action game now. I just miss the older styles

  2. There is always fights about which ff game is the best and over scruntinize on newest titles for ages. In my opinion ff16 on its core is definitely a ff game (the lores and storytelling), it's just different themes and gameplay, which is very ff game like. I mean look at the whole franchise, theres range of different type of combat systems, it just depends on your preference, imo i love the experimentations every entry does, it makes for new experience. I think ff16 is a legit ff title and it's nailing it

  3. Honestly the reason why I hated the fact that this was an action game was because every other FF that was an ARPG was hot fucking garbage with braindead ass combat. And the fact that they STILL INSIST on keeping the Stagger system is a massive issue for me

  4. It’s funny how this one is called “barely an rpg”

JRPGs in general don’t have much in the way of roleplay elements.

If this argument had been made post-10 where turn based was ditched for real-time combat I could buy it to a degree

But 12,13,14,15 have been action-based story games. There is no real roleplay or decision making you do in these games, you play through a set story

  5. Yeah Im totally trickle playing this game. Don't have a lot of time these days but every time I get to play I have a blast. The progression can be slow at times but the gameplay is so fun.

  6. Sounds like he did not get all the items for beating bosses without taking damage… If he had there's no way this would be a Complete It rating

  7. I'm a bit like Vin Diesel as I think that the final fantasy games are all about family! It's about the camaraderie with your friends. I can see why some fans aren't happy. I wouldn't prefer multiple charachters and a party – but I'm still going to buy this game. Looks aweseome!

  8. While I'm not a massive Final Fantasy fan as someone who knows some of the games in the franchise, FF16 looks very good for a modern FF game! (I look forward to playing when I get around to playing it after I play mostly every game in the franchise next year!)

  9. I’m so glad to hear how much you loved this game, knowing how much previous FF’s mean to you as well! Some of the reviews I saw for this game made me feel like I was playing a different game entirely as I absolutely adored this journey of a game. I got the plat and I’m still hungry for more of Clive and his friends!

  10. 16 is the first FF game since FF4 that I'll be skipping. 15 was so wildly disappointing that I never even finished it and nothing I've seen of 16 has changed my mind about liking what the game is or what I come to the FF franchise for.

  11. I deeply, deeply love this game and everything it entails. Feels really great to see other people playing and admiring it for what it is.
My only complaint about this game is the fetch quests that sometimes happen in main scenario. From accomplishing something amazing, to random fetching, back to amazing stuff, this gap feels very MMO-like, and I hope they can take this as a learning experience for next entries on the series 🙏

  12. A simple, although effective way to control party members could be something similar to the paradigm shifts in XIII.
The action already has the player very busy, but setting up specific strats for the crew would have been the icing on the cake

  13. Torgal is actually really useful. He does good damage if you actually keep telling him to attack while you also attack. I found that there is a sizable difference in damage output during stagger if you spam torgal while also attacking

Also, he warps to you when called to attack. So if you attacked someone and the enemy had a little hp but got flung away, even if torgal is fighting someone else, just press d-pad up to throw torgal at the soon to be dead enemy while you confine on to a new target. He really helps get through things faster

  14. It's a FF story but an FF game by name and wallpaper only. It's a great game and a lot of fun, but you can literally make some surface level changes, give it a new name, and there'd be nothing resembling FF about it. It's obvious why they made it a mainline FF, but it should have just been an new IP.

  15. If I were on PS5 then this and FF7 Remake seems like my ideal entry-point. It has that boldly beautiful and otherworldly artstyle that captivated me from afar implying an epic scale that’s hard to replicate. But with what looks like the kind of gameplay that feels inherently satisfying. I hope I can play it someday.
