  1. Aaah, when you mentioned "some little side things" you were planning to do before the next patch, I did not dare to hope this would be one of them – since iirc it takes a little time 😀
Glad we get to see it either way!

  2. Playfriends, it's time to reminisce. To remember the exploits of the last 36 episodes, and to think of those we have lost. So that we can steel ourselves for those we can yet save. This is your spoiler free lore comment.

If Tataru's popularity surprises you, you may be forgetting how beloved she is to the community. Although, some of her tavern exploits start to give the impression that she's got a cavalcade of romantic admirers, too.

While Durmin is running around visiting the far flung outposts of Ishgard, let's finally document the four high houses which have formed the bulk of the aristocracy of Ishgard. We know House Fortemps well, but the other 3 deserve some mention.

House Durendaire's primary interaction with Durmin has been through Redwall at Falcon's Nest. They are tasked with the defense of the Observatorium and Falcon's Nest, and are much more involved in the Astrologian job quests. The Chief Astrologian Forlemort is a ardent believer in Ishgardian Astrology, focusing on reading the movements of the Dravanians. His nephew Jannequinard is a adherent of Sharlyan Astrology (the version players learn), but comes off as an ineffectual fop. Count Durendaire is a stuffy man, who holds close to tradition, but is mercantile minded. He eventually becomes a force in the rebuilding of Ishgard, and even starts to volunteer as an orderly at a local hospital, after he gets off his high horse. The Count's major tragedy which influences his worldview was the loss of his son. The heir of House Durendaire was lost at sea, and the Count has dismissed the benefits of interaction with the world outside of Ishgard due to the pain. That being said, there are rumors that the lost heir lives on, free of the expectations of Ishgardian aristocracy…

House Haillenarte has two interactions with Durmin so far, but the siblings are far flung. The House has lost much of its glory in the days since the Calamity. The Stone Vigil has once been one of their forts, and the loss if it has tarnished them. That being said, the rising generation of the house is in good hands. The youngest, Francel, was once accused of being a heretic by the inquisitors, but Durmin came to his aid, clearing the man's name. Francel is now being selected as the chief administrator of the new Firmament project, a massive effort to have artisans rebuild damaged sections of Ishgard and give the people of the Brume a better place to live. Francel's sister is Laniaitte, the commander of the Rose Knights, and Durmin's contact in the Sea of Clouds. There, she champions the martial ability of the house, and gains them glory through excellent leadership. The scion of House Haillenarte, Stephanivien, does not seek to be a knight, but does seek to defend and improve Ishgard in his own way. Stephanivien is the head of the Skysteel Manufactory, and leads the Machinists job. Here, he seeks to modernize Ishgard, even if his father sees little benefit in the Manufactory, and would rather his son bear the arms of a knight. Stephanivien has an uphill battle, but the Count is not unreasonable to change.

Finally, House Dzemael. Dzemael is the strongest of the high houses, and frequently serves as the antagonist during Ishgardian politics (assuming the Church isn't involved). They directly oppose the Skysteel Manufactory, and are seen as staunch traditionalists. There are two notable "good eggs" from the house. The first is acquainted with Durmin, being the Aesthetician Jandelaine, who will do players' hair and makeup. The other is the retired Count Tarresson, who was once a storied artisan. Tarresson's skill in both crafting and manipulative politics are needed during the Moogle Tribe Quests, where cunning is required to motivate the Moogles of Moghome into becoming a capable group of artisans.

  3. Tbh reliving this sidequest chain makes me sad we don’t get equivalents for the rest of the expansions. Given where we are prior to the 6.1 and 6.2 patches, it feels like we could have a new series like this for the MSQ to that point and it’d fit right in.

  4. Re equivalent quests in 4/5/6: 4.0 has Doman Restoration, which sends you all over (and I think you’ve done it)?

5.0’s is just part of MSQ. I can see why they made it a mandatory thing due to who is where at the end of 5.3.
6.0 has one, requires completion of the 4.x normal raids. Omega Beyond the Rift is this for EW.

  5. The Sultana is part of a bunch of crafter quests. I saw her wearing that disguise just yesterday doing goldsmithing quests xD
But my first time was in this cutscene, I think
I don't remember her mentioning much

  6. So to answer Dan's question about whether other expansions have quests like this, its complicated. A journey of reflection that is as a long and detailed as this, no. But bonus quests unlocked by MSQ completion that deeply add to the story context at hand, yes. The specifics are vaguer expac to expac and some are tied to features.
MAJOR SPOILERS for all expacs below

Stormblood has 2 quests that qualify, although one is a feature quest.

The Doman Reconstruction – the feature unlock questline I mentioned with weekly caps to progression
A Mor Dhona sidequest unlocked a good way through the patches called "Take with a Tonze of Salt"

Shadowbringer has many of its reflection style quests wrapped in its MSQ, but there a some odds and ends you can poke at

The finale to the Role Quests is essential viewing in my mind, but that requires doing 4 questlines so it quite a bit of extra leveling and the void quests
More immediately there is a quest called "One Final Journey" which unlocks after completing 5.1

Endwalker has three quests to explore in this style,
Taturu's Grand Endeavor – in the markets of the EW city, requires side content completion for some parts.
Spoiler Name :Beyond the Rift – on the docs of EW new city
Shadowed Pasts- Starts at a location near where 6.2 ends

  7. 38:22 I started in Gridania and I am pretty certain that while this line of dialogue is similar, it omits the mention of having seen the disguise before. I love all the little details like this based on what content you've already done. It really helps the world feel more alive.

  8. I….had no idea this quest chain existed. I almost never check side quests, especially before Shadowbringers. I never would have thought to talk with the manor steward……for my almost 2000 hours in this game, here's something not only I've never done, but never even heard of.

  9. I did this quest just to see if the Sultana dialogue would be different for my Lominsan character, although I have done the Goldsmith line and met her in a future expansion. It does omit the mention of seeing it before.
Mostly though I'm glad you showed me this quest exists but I was able to see the end of myself. Really nice conclusion, I wonder if there is something like this for subsequent expansions. I'd like to do one for Stormblood before I begin Shadowbringer.

  10. ….ok I'm sorry but the line "such individuals may gladly trade their swords for sycthes" is kinda funny now in hindsight because of Reaper. The job cannonically started with farmers turning their working tools into weapons and well…new context.

  11. Huh, I just noticed that Raubahn's sword is on the most awkward side to draw from. Odd.

This is a very interesting quest chain. Not exactly unwelcome, either. I don't play a lot of games that either recognize how much damage change you've inflicted brought about, or games that make you retrace your steps literally. It's usually flashbacks or flashback scenes or just cutscenes.

  12. 10:17 "Bleak frontier" my butt. You are on a floating island. There's color! Yes, it's a bit far from Ishgard proper, a bit lacking in terms of creature comforts, but "bleak" has nothing to do with anything here.

  13. 14:59 Good guess!
15:09 And got attacked – a lot – for it. I hope you're not building to that, it would ruin both our days, and probably end yours.
    15:30 Yeah, in that order.
15:40 He was also willing to break a lot of shit in order to keep things the way he understood them. Are you walking away from me?

  14. 16:54 The Ishgardians and Dravanians aren't at war anymore!
17:16 Yeah, he's the best guy for it, I think.
17:23 A-heh. I hope you don't mind my playing for the away team, if you will. They needed the confidence booster.
17:34 Just be sure you double-check the drinks.

  15. 18:47 I wouldn't call it small.
18:56 You helped rescue an allied general from his captivity as a prisoner of our enemies! Not a small task in the slightest!
19:04 And I'm sure I can speak for the rest of the then-extant Scions when I say we couldn't have done it without you.
19:35 …Yeah, that is next on the list.
20:02 Home again, home again, jiggety jig… Where's the fire?

  16. 20:53 I happened to be passing through, taking the time to reflect before all hell broke loose – again – and Higiri mentioned you might want it. Good to apply it, or something similar, daily, she said.
    21:07 Don't tempt me~!
22:39 And assuming my day job doesn't interfere, I'll be right there beside you.

23:51 …Really now? There's a coincidence. I'll certainly try to keep things civil.
    24:13 Hiii~!
24:27 I'm reasonably sure it was, but not to kill her. I think.
24:49 Yeah, that's the trouble with primals. (Lucky Shiva wasn't in a tempering mood, come to think of it – or maybe that was Ysayle's influence?)
25:00 Aaaand that's my cue to step out of the way. Good knowing you survived and are willing to listen. You'd be astounded at how rarely those two qualities intersect in people that meet with me.
25:14 There's still time for that. Just saying. Farewell until then!

  18. I know there are more expansions, but I've always been intrigued about what occurs after the credits in a typical JRPG. This is a delightful, endearing answer to the question, "What does the hero do after dealing with the world-shattering threat?" FFXIV appears to be full of these novel ideas and juggling numerous elements with great world building, so nothing feels like it is coming from totally out of left field.

  19. I love that our Warrior of Light can still be messed with, even tho he's the hero. I like that they give your character little personality traits like that.
And Nanamo sneaking out of the castle is so cute! Of course she would love to go outside once in a while
