Fighting Against All Odds: A Trans Woman's Journey of Self-Acceptance

Ever since I was a child, I used to dress up as a woman. One day, my father asked me very politely, “There’s a term called ‘hijra’. Do you know what ‘hijra’ means?” He elaborated on what it meant according to him and asked me, “Do you want to become like them?” I said no. Since that day, I had internalized transphobia and thought that if I expressed my feminine traits, people would call me ‘hijra’.

As I went through puberty, I started realizing I was attracted to men. After a Google search, I reached the conclusion that I must be gay and I accepted my identity. After my mother passed away, I lost the only person who supported me and things got toxic after that. My father was shown some of my cross dressing pictures and I was beaten to no end.

I decided to leave my house that day and that was the beginning of me becoming Shayra. But moving out put me in some serious financial crises. When my mehendi business wasn’t working out, I had to provide escort services to feed myself. There, too, I faced a lot of abuse, but even the police didn’t help me.

Then, I joined an NGO where I still work. We work for the healthcare of the transgender community and do everything we can to help them. I don’t want anyone in the community to face the same challenges that I did. I have managed to get through those tough times by healing myself, and while my life isn’t perfect right now, it’s definitely sailing smoother.

I am deeply honored to share my story on the Solh App, a platform where we come together to support each other during our most difficult times. Whether facing your own personal struggle, or simply need a compassionate ear to listen, their community is here for you.
