Ive never seen the hat man or pigs flying!! Not fair!!!
I had an experience a few years back. But it wasn’t a top hat it looked more like a fisherman’s outfit at sea. It was just the silhouette of him with no eyes. It’s was completely black. He was at the side of my bed looking down at me for a few seconds. After those few seconds he lunged at my neck with his hands. I had a sleep paralysis episode at the time so I couldn’t move right away but when I was finally able to move I freaked out and screamed at the top of my lungs and leaped out of bed and crashed into the wall. It freaked me out so much I was afraid to go bed for a week or 2. It only happened that one time and I didn’t know about this phenomenon until a few years after the incident.
Ok, but how do you take one out?
I saw him behind my bedroom door when I was a child. Just stood there. I called out for my parents as I was scared, but looking back it seems I was not threatened, I was simply aware of him, and that was an extremely disquieting experience.
Pretty sure my childhood home was haunted though.
I can't tell you his name, but I can his past. As to the hat, it's a wide-brimmed flat-topped preachers hat. Not many youngsters know of this old hat, hence the confusion.
The 'Hat Man' is rage; rage at God, at the injustice of life… and deep down, sorrow. He died of (I believe) an accidental drug or chemical over-dose; not from recreational drugs, but from some sort of pharmacist concocted one in the (perhaps?) late 1600s – early 1700s.
A layman preacher, loss (a wife, and several children. I don't know how they died, but I get the impression it was violent/traumatic, he couldn't save them, and "God wouldn't"… ), regret and sorrow were part of the fabric his life, seemingly constant companions, his life one long trial that slowly broke him down and robbed him of his faith. It was at this time, as he turned his face from the light of his God, when rage was consuming his very being, that he died in his sleep. Unable, or perhaps unwilling to pass over, he inhabits the shadow realm, visiting the mortal realm and watching sleeping beings that trigger some resonance within him, something that reminds him of his life, be it good… or ill.
NEVER try and initiate communication if you're high; all you'll get is hatred for your "folly" "squandering of … gift", and while not violent per-se, he CAN cause you some serious grief if you focus his rage on YOU instead of the echo of his past that drew him to you…, but he MAY converse if approached… correctly (no, I won't say more. You have all the clues you need, although I WILL say tread VERY carefully if you do).
What many people call fear is I believe a natural response to a shadowy man standing unbidden in the corner of a bedroom late at night emanating seething waves of rage. He doesn't deliberately induce fear, per-se, but it DOES strengthen his… hmm, his 'grip' on the mortal plane, if you will; it helps solidify him at a time and place, and makes his rage all the more palpable.

"Fear the hatman" Na, he is just part of several minor spirits known as shadow people that feed no the fear of people. Different shadow people feed on different kinds of human fears. For me this myth just referr to the past traumas that might limit the person suffering them and that might manifest as shadowy figures that induce fear (the mind is a powerful tool that can work against the bearer if filled with fear ir negative self talk).
It annoys me when people rudely point out an error in someone's pronunciation. I think it is rather rude. If it is a word not heard often then anyone can do that, no need to point it out. Regarding the man, luckily I have never encountered him, must be terrifying. I have seen a ghost however, and strangely enough she didn't scare me at all, I was just mystified about it. Also I had one who used to touch me very firmly on my back, not a push, but an obvious touch. I would swing round and no one was there, and never saw an actual body.

And that drawing of the Hat Man is right on point,,you can see a face, but not any detail..And when he does move towards you from your bedroom door, he does so very quickly!! And I would wake up with half a scream coming out, and scared to go back to sleep..It’s something that you never forget, and I’m 53 years old now..
I experienced mines at age 20 for the first time. He stood in my doorway, and bend down to get into my room. He walked towards my bed and crawled into it. I felt the pressure in the bed and everything. He then laid on me, putting all his weight on me and i couldnt breathe. Then he just disappeared and i was left crying in bed. I didnt know about him at all…. im 26 now and havent seen him again.
I saw the hat man before I had ever heard of it – late afternoon in New England I was arriving home and ready to unlock the door when I saw it move through my entryway and into my garage. It was very tall, had a cloak, and that now-iconic hat – like a tangible shadow crossing through walls. You’d be wise not to take me at my word, but I am telling the truth.

My girlfriend saw him behind me when we did a video chat, while she was in Europe, I was living with my mom at the time, BUT two other people that have lived in that house have seen him, and the house seems off to people who have not lived there before, I allegedly ran after a shadow in the house when my aunt was babysitting me at 5 years old, she got so scared she locked us in the bedroom while holding a kitchen knife, this was in daylight hours. I personally do not remember seeing him, but 4 people have seen in the same house, I am a skeptic, however there seems to be something to the hat man. EDIT: Just to clarify I had not heard of the hat man before the incident with my GF and none of the other people had heard of him either, but when I researched it I found pictures and showed them to each one individually, and they all got scared and said THAT IS HIM!!!

definitely not internet born, i was seein that shit before i was even old enough to understand what the internet was. thing is the one my family and i have been seeing we call the cowboy hat guy and it always felt like a safe presence not anything evil so might be different entity who knows
My mum saw him in the early 1960’s London. She was laying in bed and he appeared at her bedroom door, she was in her early 20’s at the time. As far as I know she never saw him again.
You cover so much and in such depth on this subject. The history alone on such a disturbing figure is intriguing. A couple of other characters that came to mind for me was Jack the Ripper stalking in the dark shadows. And also the entity from the very creepy Australian horror film: The Babadook.
I saw him through my childhood & it even spoke to me . I was terrified of it at first, but then I started to ignore it & whatever it was would start watching me while I was sleep & I remember having nightmares and it’s face/ red eyes would appear in my dreams & haunted me in my dreams. It didn’t like being ignored ..
I was about 11 or 12 when I saw something like this. Standing in the corner of my bedroom, didnt move or anything. The house was built in the 40s, only saw it once.

I love the legends and mystery this has spawned bur for many years the shadow man or hat nan was the most common hallucination seen during episodes of sleep paralysis and also during waking hours but only as a glimpse usually partially hidden behind a door or similar for only a second before completely vanishing. Many psychologists agree the waking experiences are a mixture of a number of types of waking hallucinations and a very basic innate fear we have is a tall dark indistinguishable stranger within our homes and safe spaces, we may simply mistake the position of a door, or piece of furniture the brain immediately reacts and can then fill in the mistaken shadow or angle of door etc with a mistaken hallucination of the perceived danger again most commonly interpreted as a powerful dark but featureless attacker which is only seen for usually the most 2 seconds. The experiencer will then have this image affect them both consciously and subconsciously and almost be in a heightened state of alert expecting to see this vision again, and to some the prolonged heightened state which leads to prolonged release of cortisol which then makes their state of mind even more questionable and likely to experience such things again.
Aside from the classic 'old hag' the shadow man is the second most seen hallucination during sleep paralysis.
I myself have suffered from sleep paralysis for many years, I always saw a shadow man, a tall broad silhouette of a man. However when the hat man in the trench coat with red eyes became a creepypasta staple, suddenly my paralysis silhouette with no features and no shapes indicating clothing or hair and no face just all black became a shadow man but now in a hat coat and over time developed red eyes. I then began to have waking glimpses of this. Thinking quite rationally about it knowing I had implanted this image in my mind I began practising deep meditation for relaxation whilst visualising this figure tripping up over his coat and his hat falling off for at least an hour daily for months and I found it helped. During sleep paralysis he appeared as he used to, and I didn't see anything whilst awake I think because I had managed to relax and cleanse the implanted fear out of my mind by making it humorous to me as personally I felt that would have the best affect to counteract my fear.
I believe the hat man has simply become another Internet version of slender man that so many actually believed existed or they had bought into existence somehow.
In reference to the visions seen during certain rituals and whilst using certain hallucinogenic plants, would the most obvious vision for the human mind to create in that state would be a shadow man, a literal representation of the experiencers own shadow self or subconscious self? The brains most innate creation whilst under the influence of certain drugs and conditions is that of the most basic human form yet usually lacking in detail because in the majority of these traditions, rituals or even experimenters have already had this description strongly suggested to them, therefore they are almost waiting, expecting to see it and hallucinogenic drugs will make exactly that happen for them. It has already been implanted with the power of suggestion has it not?

When I was a freshman in college my girlfriend and I were messing around with a ouija board and got something that called itself Hell's Man. She foolishly started to antagonize it and made it mad. After that, strange things started to happen in my dorm room. The lights would turn on after we had gone to bed, my roommate's CD player would only play 10 seconds of any Madonna CD and then shut off(1995 lol) and the door alarm would go off at 2am every night. Finally, one day I was coming back to the dorm after class, turned the corner and there in the middle of the quad in broad daylight was an 8 to 9 foot shadow with what looked like a cloak and big brimmed hat. Jett black except for red glowing eyes. I backpedaled a bit and when I looked back up, it was gone. It was almost 20 years later when I first heard of the Hat Man as something many others have seen. I'm still afraid of him.

I also was soooooooo shocked when i found out that i was not the only one that saw him, tho i saw him during the late hrs of the day, not at night, and i know is not some "media viral stuff"· cause i am 40 yo, and i saw him when internet was not a ting, plus we got internet at my house until 2002 by that time it was over 10 years that i saw the trench coat hat man.
