Surely there used to be many more who preached in this compelling way, and not always in the Catholic Church. I'd be very interested to know what models, if any, Fr Altman had heard before he was ordained. If at any stage he had heard protestant preachers it would not surprise me. The current Abbot of Ampleforth has said he was influenced as a young boy when he attended a nonconformist chapel with his grandmother. Having heard him preach on the internet, I can well believe him.
