Hard to believe he wrote this in 1910.
I'm a long time fan of RVWs music. My favorite recording of this is Neville Marriner at St. Martins Academy in the Field. It's a well produced recording, lovingly rendered on vinyl.
Brian, what a great choice! Complex and moving. Thank you!
Excellent I’ve been hoping you will do A Lark Ascending too
Hi Jeff! I didn’t realize you knew this work already, but I’m glad you enjoyed it anyway. This is the only performance on video I know of where the strings sound like an organ at times. I only know of two CD recordings (both probably were on vinyl as well, but all my LPs were destroyed thirty years ago when my parents’ basement flooded, so I no longer have or collect any vinyl) that have this effect. They are the Neville Mariner with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and the Barry Wordsworth with the New Queen's Hall Orchestra performances. Both of these are also available free on YouTube if you don’t have them or if you haven’t heard them before.
I have sung William's 5 Mystical Songs: Vocal Score many times! Rise heart! I enjoy all the songs you post! Have a great weekend!
Jay Bocook transcribed this for winds, and I programmed it for my Wind Ensemble. They were completely mesmerized with it.
Amazing.
You mention, "The Lark ascending". Were you aware that Voces8 have recorded a vocal arrangement of the piece, featuring solo violin?
