Families search Syria’s Sednaya Prison for loved ones after al-Assad’s fall

Syrians from across the country have been flocking to the notorious Sednaya prison near Damascus, hoping to find long-lost family members.
Thousands of Syrians were arrested and detained there under the Assad regime for opposing the government.

Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr reports from Sednaya, Damascus.

  1. We all know that most of those prisoners were terrorists from ISIS and rapists right? LIke this isn't a feel good piece….none of the families are gonna say oh yeah my brother was a rapist or a terrorist…I"m sorry anything toppled by Israel isn't a a good thing. The Syrians are about to get a reality check.

  2. Anyone who is freed from torture is blessed. Remember there are many more prisons around the world doing these things including what Israel is doing to the Palestine people. May all those being tortured be free and safe forever.

  3. The international community's belated response to this longstanding conflict raises concerns of hypocrisy, particularly from organizations like the United Nations and humanitarian groups, which must now demonstrate genuine commitment to resolving the issue.

  4. I'm Syrian, Assad’s Regime prisons have tortured and killed hundreds of thousands of Syrians in ways beyond anyone imagination. What you’ve seen is just one of many brutal tools used in the prison. For example, the 'French Chair' was specifically designed to break a person’s spine, causing excruciating pain and permanent damage then the prisoner will be left to die slowly.

Even worse, women who were raped in these prisons gave birth to children who were forced to live in the same hellish conditions. These children grew up in confinement, only to face unimaginable abuses themselves. These horrors weren’t isolated incidents—they were systematic, deliberate, and part of a regime built on terror. This is the kind of regime the Syrian people rose against, fighting tirelessly for 14 years to reclaim their freedom. Despite the immense cost—over a million lives lost and half the population displaced—they emerged victorious. This triumph isn’t just a victory for Syrians; it’s a victory for humanity, a testament to the resilience and courage of those who refused to live in oppression.

For the first time in my life, I can freely share and express what we, as Syrian people, endured under the horrific rule of the Assad family. In the past, even making this comment would have been enough to land me in one of their underground prisons, where I’d face unimaginable torture, only to end up like so many others—executed under the crushing execution press and dissolved in acid. Imagine living in a place where people suffered even for smaller reasons than this.

We had a saying in every Syrian home: 'The walls have ears.' That’s how deeply rooted our fear was—we couldn’t even whisper the name Assad without feeling like our lives were at risk. I can’t believe the fear we lived in, and now, I’m crying tears of relief because I can finally speak freely, without the terror of ending up in those prisons for simply sharing my thoughts. Live free, live proud—Syria is finally free. As syrian people after all this suffering we just want peace and love for Syria and for the entire world. Humanity will win always!!
