Falklands Conflict in the Air | How British Harriers beat the odds

When the Falklands Conflict began Argentina seemingly had a massive advantage in the skies. They had over 100 aircraft of varying types. Some could operate from the Argentinian mainland and others could operate from airstrips on the Falklands themselves. Meanwhile, the British Task Force initially had only 20 Sea Harriers which could fit on its two aircraft carriers, HMS Hermes and HMS Invincible. It was up to them to protect the Task Force at sea as well as the troops on the ground, but to many that seemed like an impossible task.

In this 3rd episode of our Falklands series IWM Curator Paris Agar examines the conflict in the air. Just how big was the Argentinian advantage? How did each side change their strategy? And how did British pilots beat the odds and take control of the skies? To answer those questions and more Agar takes an in-depth look at the aircraft of the Falklands Conflict including the Vulcan, Pucará, Wessex and Harrier.

  1. British making propoganda creating heroism stories about their imperalism and anti-democratic moves and yet people are admiring them in the comments. What a world we are living in.

  2. Its not Amusing realy. The Argentinian forces didn't want the war and most were conscripts. The British Forces were all volunteers so their mind set was in their favor. The British was highly trained as they are to this day.

  3. A very long time ago I was walking down to the River Clyde as I took
a photo of the British Warship
The HMS Plymouth that was hit
by a sea dart missile as I have got a photo of it in my living room wall as I had the whole photograph blown up
I am dedicating this photograph to my old school friends who are both sisters and I hope to see them both again very soon to Chris and Hester from Billyxxx

  4. The argentian airplanes needed hundreds of kilometers to reach the Malvinas, they had just few minutes to fight and try to come back to their airbase in the continent, the British just had the airbase on mobile carries than in just minutes to enter in combat and had enough time to patrol, intercept and fight and fly back!

  5. After the Victory of the USSR over Euro-Fascism and Hitler —- from 1945 to 2022, it was the USA and England that firmly took the place of the new Hitler No. 2 and International Terrorist No. 1. Spending tens of billions of dollars again on the revival of a new Euro -fascism and Nazism in Europe and arming the entire world terrorism from Ukraine to Syria ( ISIS ) to start a new World War No. 3.

The USA has been the main sponsor of terrorism and Nazism since 1932

  7. those upgraded sidewinder missiles really made the difference for the harriers. had they been relagated to the old air-to-air missiles, it would have been a lot harder. Harriers also took off from container ships supporting the british too – the atlantic causeway does not often get the recognition it deserves.

  8. The Sea Harrier did it alone. The RAF were useless. It was the Navy alone that achieved the impossible. The Vulcan did almost nothing….it was essentially a fig leaf for the useless RAF. The useless RAF Harriers didn’t stop the Argentinian planes coming in instead they tried to pick them off AFTER they had dropped their bombs!?!?!

  10. The harrier is a stupid plane. It's heat signature is too great, it's slow, and vulnerable, and consumes too much fuel.

They should have just made the A-10 with a carrier-capable landing gear, and that would have been better.

  14. We crossed the border over the Andes from Chile into Argentina 2 years after the war. They had a sign that read, "Las Malvinas todavia son nuestras" – "The Falklands are still ours." We had a few students from New Zealand with us and the border guards gave them a lot of hassles, looked through their bags, wasted their time, etc. In the end they let us through and everyone was cool.
