‘Failure of contingency planning’: Govt ‘wiped out’ army’s utility helicopter capability

Strategic Analysis Australia Director Peter Jennings has criticised the Labor government’s “failure of contingency planning” after defence “wiped out” the army’s utility helicopter capability.

There are fears Queensland could be left desperately short of helicopter support if Cyclone Kirrily causes widespread damage.

“What I find just unimaginable is how is it that defence thought it could wipe out the army’s utility helicopter capability, without a clear understanding of when a replacement would actually be there, and that wouldn’t matter,” Mr Jennings told Sky News contributor Steve Price.

“This was in advance of cyclone season, in advance of bushfire and flood season, and without taking into account any terrorism risk or international events.

“Somewhere in the system between defence and government, there has been a failure of contingency planning.”

  1. As if the loons and goons have any credibility on any of these topics.
All they have are irrational opinions and views; no objectively verifiable facts at all.
Murdoch/Sky is a disinformation outlet as sure as Goebbels' were.

  4. Australia is a huge landmass. And labor buys military equipment – like it is running Liechtenstein. Australia's military needs – a four x plan. That they should be equipping four regions. And given the immense size of Australia. West Australia – is one zone – Northern Australia and Queensland – zone two – NSW & Victoria – zone three – South Australia and N.T. – zone four.

And each zone – is equipped – with the same amount – of Navy – Army – Air Force personnel and military assets.

The overlap – allows – for break downs. Change over of equipment.

The problem for abysmal albo – is he thinks – he is only defending Canberra. Nothing else exists – in his little narcissist mind.

There is no way Australia could even muster – even our military to even defend one state if Australia was attacked. There just is not the equipment or personnel – to even have enough people to fill our under strength units.

The issue – of where world peace is right now. Is compulsory military service – should be started now. And any people who can;t serve – due to objections to serving in the military – or due to health – or mental ability – should – have to serve in a community service job.

The people that that do compulsory military service – get – reduced HEXS fees for university – trade -or TAFE courses.

The people who don't serve. Do four years – community service roles.

That way – our military – has the capacity – to quickly – adapt.

  6. This government needs to ensure all corporations pay their taxes in full and it should also immediately scrap the stage three tax cuts and use the funds that will be freed up to spend a great deal more on rapidly improving the capabilities of our defence forces. It is not beyond the ability of Australians to understand that we lack fuel reserves and don’t even have the capacity to manufacture our own munitions. This government must also ensure that it compels foreign multinationals to pay their fair share of taxes on the resources extracted from our soils.

Australia's military is far too small to achieve the task required of it as it is vastly dwarfed in terms of numbers of personnel and equipment by all of its neighbours. How can we defend ourselves when we don’t even have the capacity to manufacture our own munitions?

This is the result of decades of underfunding and neglect by our politicians who prefer to focus on quality of lifestyle type issues at the expense of fundamental matters of existence. Enabling this strategic apathy and negligence is the misguided belief that US military power is nearly unlimited and globally dominant and that it would automatically come to the defence of Australia should any of her neighbours attack her.

The US is not obligated under the ANZUS Alliance to send troops or equipment to our aid in the event of an attack upon us. They are only obligated to engage in talks with us and nothing more. We must provide for our own defence.

Our politicians need to explain to the public that rights and privileges go hand in hand with responsibilities, one of which is the defence of the nation. We need to introduce national service and link its completion by individuals to their right to access the many benefits of being a citizen of this country.

Australia is an under-armed country that needs to spend a great deal more on defence than it has in the past. We need to spend our wealth on building up our military instead of allowing foreign corporations to sell off our mineral wealth and pay nothing in tax and, in some cases, even receiving taxpayer-funded handouts. Most of all, we need to invest in developing our own nuclear weapons capability instead of giving our wealth away to tax avoiding corporations.
