Lost Chapters are Space Marine Chapters that have been destroyed. Some were annihilated in one sudden strike, while others were slowly diminished through attrition, being unable for whatever reason to recruit new marines fast enough to replace combat losses. Information about such chapters is often lost during the millennia and all-too scarce.

They should not to be confused with Renegade Chapters or Chaos Space Marine forces, who have been declared Excommunicate Traitoris by the Inquisition and/or the High Lords of Terra. These forces technically still exist but have gone rogue, breaking their vows of loyalty towards the Imperium. Some of them simply fell to Chaos, others are idealistic rebels who rejected the all-too oppressive Imperial authority for some reason.

  1. One interesting incident involving a lost Chapter would be the tale of Celestial Swords, who were wiped out during the 9th Black Crusade. They were slaughtered to the last man, but the bodies were recovered. However, for some reason, there were almost two thousand of them, far above what you would see in a Codex compliant Chapter.
After the investigation, it was revealed that due to some logistical mishap by Administrum, two different Chapters were given the same name and heraldry at the same time, and had spent centuries operating completely unaware of each other. The Clerical error was only discovered after both Chapters fought and died in the same campaign.

  2. Apparently, there was a retcon regarding the World Engine. The entire thing was engulfed in a civil war, and one of the Necron Lords saw the space marines barreling towards their rival's territory and lowered the shields for the Battlebarge. Otherwise, it probably would have just ended up like the many drop pods beforehand.

  3. Random goofy Nurgle marines loping round the corner haphazardly and finding ALLLL the Predators with THE biggest, most ridiculous smiles on their faces:

Grandfather Nurgle slimes down from high today! It's all coming up Poxhouse 😁😏

  4. Bricky that isn't the alpha legion in my walls that you're hearing.

It's the alpha legion fighting the night Lords, apparently there's someone with a similar name that they both wanted and they've yet to ask me what mine is

  5. Fun fact about the Crimson Fists: they were the original poster boys of the SPace Marines in Rogue Trader and V2…. Of course switching to the Ultramarines wasn't really a big change, given they're also blue XD
