Experts in AI warn the new technology poses a threat to humanity | 7.30

The future of humanity is at risk. That’s the message from the world’s top experts in Artificial Intelligence, who released the following statement overnight: “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.”

It comes after last month’s plea from hundreds of leaders in the field, calling for a pause in the technology’s development to allow time for governments to catch up.

Stuart Russell has been studying AI for 40 years, advising the World Economic Forum, the UK and US governments. He spoke to 7.30’s Sarah Ferguson. Subscribe: https://ab.co/3yqPOZ5 Tell us about your experience with AI: https://www.abc.net.au/news/programs/730/about-contact

  1. This is ridiculous.
Yes these LLM's can chat but this does mean that they can think. They simply predict the next word based on statistics. In order to "conspire" they would actually need to have the ability to think and have self motivations.

Current systems do not even have good working memories. They generally have no ability to use new information outside of training. They can not learn like humans. They can not apply knowledge to new things.

Sure some time in the future they may be able to think like people. Currently there is no known way to do that and no telling what kind of hardware and or software would be required.

  2. Good, humanity's extinction will ALWAYS be from their own hands, I say bring it on! humanity is quite literally a parasitic species on this earth & far too ignorant to prevent catastrophe.
I mean, 90%+ people are incredibly primitive, uneducated, ignorant, gullible, greedy and have a superstitious mind or imaginary sky daddy.
9.5% are logical, educated and intelligent
.5% are genuine intellect moving way too fast.
we need to move as fast as our slowest members otherwise stupidity will always win.

  3. Don’t listen to these people. OpenAI just wants regulation to stop it’s competitors from catching up. Google wants it so they can catch up to OpenAI. There is no existential risk, the risk is more about concentration of power, increased inequality, etc.

  4. As if there aren't enough things to be afraid of; climate collapse, China, viruses, economic collapse; you now have to come up with something else.
If anybody is looking for me I'll be hiding under the bed shaking and dribbling in terror.
    Thanks a lot (not).

  5. We are constantly bombarded by both legal and illegal marketing, fraud, cons, identity theft and harrassment – Now have that maginified expotentially. A machine that is designed to find weaknesses in every aspect of human vulnerabilities, and then give that to a human who is not bond by the same legal, ethical and moral conventions = Welcome to the future, which is from this second forward.

  6. Humanity will survive. It is democracy that is facing extinction not due to China Russia or AI but due to the progressive class' need to destroy western civilisation. The irony is that the progressive class is the least equipped to survive such an event.

  7. The biggest problem i have with these hysterical doomsayers is they can't come up with a plausible explanation on how we'll become extinct. AI will persuade us that climate change isn't a threat? Lol. We're already doing that without AI.

  8. The second people are displaced by AI is when the same people will destroy the critical infrastructure that supports AI. Humans will always have the upper hand and AI will only push people so far before it’s stopped. “A conflict we are bound to lose” this dude lives on the web and it shows.

  9. Between religion and politics we've turned the whole planet into a shitfight where some push to clean it up and others have no intention of doing so. What makes people think they deserve the planet? The end of us can only be a good thing.

  10. AI is the brain of the progress of the entire society. There is no doubt that it is needed by all walks of life. It will accurately introduce automatic manufacturing, will lead Taiwan for 50 years, and will enter extraterrestrial civilization. This is the beginning of human technology and the first stage of the industrial revolution. In the future, mobile phones will no longer exist, and projection audio ip will be ubiquitous. For example, will you be using the radio or the current mobile phone? In the future, personal computers and tablet computers will not exist, and knowledge has entered the cloud.

  11. Artificial intelligence (AI) is not dangerous or neither is Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) or even semi autonomous artificial general intelligence (SAAGI) but Fully Autonomous artificial intelligence (FAAGI) could be.

  12. Worst example. AI doesn’t need to convince us to not pay attention to climate change. We already do this. scientists already are telling us if we ignore it we are doomed. Guess what we are ignoring it

  13. I always put it this way..remember the UAV? It was a picture taker only, then it got automated, then it got weapons and then it got AI. So humans took a relatively innocuous thing and turned it into smart killing machine. The future of robots, AI and quantum computing is a coming singularity and is very bleak.

  14. The best future for humanity after technological singularity is to create, together with general artificial intelligence, a virtual reality identical to the real world but unlimited and individual, where people are free to do anything imaginable while AGI protects us in the real world and expands throughout the universe to be as durable as possible

  15. I love how there's some triggered "geniuses" who say people hating on AI are believing in unrealistic science fiction movies.
MANY of the things chatgpt and AI platforms can do now are things we heard about in science fiction movies and never worried about them because we never thought they could be true cause they were stupid and unrealistic.
And now that AI can actually do those things, we're seeing unreality unfold into reality right before our very eyes. Of course it's bloody terrifying.

One of the worst scenario is A.I can launch Nuke without human control. This is the most stupid creation by Human. Not only human will extinct but God also don't have human to pray and admire.

  19. Science Radio, Swedish Radio (and Max Tegmark) can probably shut down their fantastic AI dystopia now..! Just look at how ChatGPT managed my rel. simple question (a theoretical physics problem)..!?! It couldn't even manage to leave a correct answer..! Not even a likely one… but on the contrary… an improbable one!

Here is my question (and the answer from ChatGPT):

If we hit a tennis ball with a speed of 100 km/h relative to us against a train coming towards us with a speed of 200 km/h, at what speed will the bouncing ball come towards us in km/h?

    ChatGPT

If we hit a tennis ball with a speed of 100 km/h relative to us against a train coming towards us with a speed of 200 km/h, we can use the principle of relative motion to calculate the speed of the ball after the bounce.

When the ball bounces off the train, it changes direction and will move back towards us. To determine the speed of the bouncing ball after the collision, we need to take into account both the speed of the ball relative to the train and the speed of the train relative to us.

If the speed of the ball relative to us is 100 km/h and the speed of the train relative to us is 200 km/h, we can use the principle of relative motion:

Speed of the ball relative to us = Speed of the ball relative to the train + Speed of the train relative to us

= 100 km/h + (-200 km/h) [since the speed of the train is directed towards us]

Thus, the bouncing ball will come towards us with a speed of -100 km/h relative to us. The negative sign indicates that the ball is moving towards us in the opposite direction to the movement of the train. In absolute terms, the speed of the ball is 100 km/h.

I didn't think that Max would take my science vision (sci-fi nonsense) "In the beginning man created the internet" seriously..!?? The one I sent him 15-20 years ago. But apparently it is so, according to the improbable doomsday scenarios about AI, he spreads in the media. An "AI researcher" creates AI systems..! Not someone who criticizes and speculates about the future of AI and humanity. Max is a theoretical astrophysicist and nothing else……

Reverse aging is the only solution.
