Exclusive: Roberta Laundrie's "burn after reading" letter to Brian Laundrie in Gabby Petito Case

The infamous “burn after reading” letter — which had become a focal point of the civil lawsuit filed by Petito’s family against the Laundries and their attorney Steven Bertolino — was released to WFLA Now’s JB Biunno by the Petito family Wednesday evening. The release comes after Judge Danielle Brewer denied a motion of protection against the letter’s inclusion in the discovery process as the two families head to a civil trial next year.

  1. The sentence about the body is from a meme that has been spread widely on FB for years… but still it could be to cover for the real meaning. I guess it only depends on the date it was written.

  2. I felt from the beginning that Brian knew when he left with Gabby to embark on that trip that she would not be coming home with him. I now think that there is some sick relationship between him and his mom and his mom was trying to get Gabby out of the way and poisoned Brian against Gabby, conspired to do away with her and to help him get away with murder.

  3. On the envelope she wrote "Burn after reading" – she didn't want the letter found.

It's pretty evident that this was written after Gabby's death.

No rational mother would ever express their love for their child like that and no rational family would harbor a murderer and deny helping the Petito's find their missing child. Absolutely SHAMELESS!

  4. Seriously, what mother assumes their son is going to end up in jail or kill someone? I am a parent and I would never make that assumption. You would have to know your child had a very dark side. Also Roberta sounds so much like Chris Watts mother. Sick mother/son relationship.

  5. I don't understand how this is admissible. It has no date, no names, no mention of anyone at all.
If I was a juror, this wouldn't be 'proof' to me of anything. I thought this letter was supposed to be a major factor, it shows nothing.

  6. That's not a mother. A mother loves you but does not support you when you do something wrong. A mother loves you enough to have the courage to say 'I love you but your actions are wrong'. She's a sick and twisted woman. When I read this letter, it sickened me…and then I wanted to reach through the screen and slap her really hard.

  7. Mom: feels her son is cheating on her!
It literally says: no one will love you as I do! No one’s love is better than the love I have for you! etc. etc!
Son: feels conflicted. Can’t trust women. etc etc.

    Jocasta complex vibes

  8. No one will ever convince me that the Laundries knew nothing about Brian murdering Gabby. To many coincidences they lawyered up fast, brian took off to off himself. Shovel? Burying the dead. References jail. They basically went right to the area he was found in. The letter sounds like a love letter instead of a letter to her son. I have never told my son this about jail, file, burying, shovel. They knew and knew before he came home

  9. The odds of the letter not being about Gabby is low, but it's not zero. Regardless, writing that you would dispose of a body is a bit mental. Even if it was just being outlandish in jest. Really hard to believe this woman, but I've seen weirder coincidences.

  10. Why he didn’t burn the letter?
How about: why did he take it with him?
Obviously it was the ultimate rebellion against/revenge
    Not sentimental
    Other way round
    He loved his mom
But this toxic relationship ruined him

  11. She sounds just like a mother that raised a son to believe he has no consequences. Mommy will take care of all of his problems. Too bad she didn’t raise a boy to become a man.

  12. Why write a letter involving those words and quotes to stories, knowing there was a possibility that their relationship was a bit sour, and this trip was maybe a plan between mom and son, for what may happen? Roberta is just as dirty as their son!!! And what does Dad have to say about this? Many questions and no resolution!
