There not monsters perse or aliens. There mutated humans. The hole apocalypse was started by an outbreak of a fungal virus. That’s basically an infected human over a period of time. I won’t spoil anything else!

Last of Us is a masterpiece I wish I could erase the memory and replay it fresh. It's one of the most raw stories ever. The PS5 version looks amazing too.
Really interesting to see the reaction of those who've never played the game or know anything about it. Nice to know it's still intriguing to them. Means that the quality is there and it's not my rose colored glasses filled with nostalgia.

The infection is a Fangus real life based that get control of the host . The real one just can infect Ants but in the game that Fangus changed and started to infect humans it doesn t kill the host they are not walking dead they are alive but the fungus is controling them . They Also die after sometime and start producing spors to infect more

It is zombies but its the most realistic depiction of what a zombie infection would look like. There is a species of fungus usually found in south america called cordyceps. Its spores infect a small creature like an ant. it grows and it jacks into the central nervous system and manuevers the ant into a secluded area and it just eats the damn thing from the inside out. The cordyceps in the last of us is a super mutant version that gained the ability to infect humans. It jacks into the human central nervous system and just pilots the body around until its grown enough to consume the whole body then it goes to a secluded place gets itself settled and just emits spores.

The are zombie like but they are not the undead. They are living breathing creatures that start as human, get infected with a bacterial fungus, it grows inside the person, and eventually take over their mind. The longer they live, the more grotesque and dangerous they become. So we'll be seeing different evolutions of the infected too.
