Twisters is out! It’s that cutie pie Glen Powell, who’s no Helen Hunt, but he gives Bill Paxton (even the 1996 Pax) a run for his money. Enough name dropping! This movie falls into the “classic” category for me, but I’ve learned recently that not everyone loves it the way I do. Let’s fix that! Here’s everything right with Twister!

Twisters was good. Well worth the watch.
As someone who knows a bit of atmospheric technobabble, 2:46 is actually pretty interesting. The "cap" is a term for the atmospheric instability, to my recollection (Watch a few videos on the bigger tornadoes). The break is what allows the big storms to start up. And considering the atmospheric conditions have been tracked to that moment, the cap breaking is basically the signal to the chasers to get moving.
6:32 Do not tell me you're gonna diss the majesty of the Dodge Ram. It even has a V10 under the hood! This movie was effectively a big billboard for that truck, and that truck was the catalyst for modern truck design, for better (luxury features, space for a family) or for worse (huge, macho front grilles. And, yes, the design for the second generation Dodge Ram was "macho" and based off of semis and old 50s trucks). Say what you will, one of the big three things that people remember from Twister is the red Dodge Ram, and I'm happy the connection returned for Twisters. I will agree on the J10 being an amazing truck in its own right. Heck, the platform was really excellent, as the Jeep Grand Wagoneer was actually used in an international rally event in 1972, and is the reason why AWD was banned in the WRC until the 1980s. The J10 is very cool, but so is the Ram.
8:02 The "core" is the area in a system where the tornado is, I think? You'll usually hear about it in the term "punching through the core" as driving head-on into the rain and tornado's path when chasing, as in later in this movie.
8:50 is actually pretty true, from what I've heard. Even if it's just a myth, the idea is that by doing that, you're grounding your feet since your shoes have rubber in them, while also minimizing the chances of the electricity traveling through your body from the ground itself.
9:49 And this is where the score starts that will eventually transition into "Humans Being." I actually suggest looking up "Van Halen Humans Being Billy Version" which is an edit that makes a transition from this part of the score into the song itself.
Extra fun fact: "Humans Being" was written first, and the score was built around a lot of the chords used in the song!
14:45 That is known as a "wedge." While it looks scary, not all wedges are rated as F5s. The real scary ones are actually known as "rain-wrapped" and it says it all in the name. You can't see them very well. And judging by the Twisters trailer with the 4Runner scene, they actually put one into that movie to give audiences a bit of knowledge. Not all tornadoes are as picturesque as you see in Twister.
17:20 It's probably more reading back the locations of all the sensors in the tornado. In any case, yes, it's very cheesy.
17:31 That is actually awesome. But also, not unrealistic. There are several accounts of 2x4s imbedded in buildings and even cars.
I love this movie. I've seen it several times. Nono, you didn't read that properly. I said several. With the bold text. I've seen this movie since I was three years old. It is not the best movie. But the energy is definitely there. And the tornado effects really were the best in the industry for a long time. I have yet to see the sequel, but I plan on at least giving it the time and seeing it in theaters. You did a great review, and shed light on all the best parts, especially the music hype-up scene at the beginning.
Edit 1: You forgot to win "Respect the Wind," the end credits song.
You should DEFINITELY go see Twisters in a theater. CGI isn't much better than the original, but it's still a great movie nonetheless, and the vast majority of meteorology talk in both movies is logical, but not quite correct for the scene.
As a kid, all the other stuff other than the big tornados blew past me. Looking at this now, its a waaaayyyy different movie. Also yes, you should do The Core.
RIP Shelley Duvall🥹😥
As someone who lived in Wakita and was involved in the filming of this movie, I can safely say it’s the best. Ever.
Best movie soundtrack of the 90s.
I've always heard that Joss Whedon "punched up" the dialogue in this script, and when you singled out that playful turn of rue into "rue-age", a light went off in my head – a definite Joss-ism.
ABOUT TIME BROOO
LEWEEETS GOOOOO
Still probably the best tornado movie out there. Haven't seen Twisters yet, but it's hard to top Twister. It was a combination of real tornadoes and Twister that made me fall in love with severe weather
20:40—20:52
I lost it 😂
people diss therapy because therapy is like 90% a scam hahaha
Yes, you should absolutely do Minority Report.
8:40 – Yes. I would love to see that.
Yes do minority report! Do it, Do it
I don't know why, but "Rabbit is good, Rabbit is wise" is the line that sticks with me.
I just watched Twisters and was pleasantly surprised! I don't believe in spoilers, but it's exactly what you'd expect from a sequel (yes sequel, not reboot)
BUT with a twist! I had to make the joke, don't hate. I really enjoyed Twisters. Thanks for covering the first one. I had this on VHS and wore out some of the tornado sequences because I kept rewinding it
Empire described this as the world's first plot free movie, but I have a lot of affection for it. I think it was one of the earliest DVD releases so a lot of people have nostalgia for it.
"Hello there" 😆
Wow, quick recovery on the video. Hopefully it wasn't too much of a headache on your end Lee. Thank you for all your hard work and passion you put into your videos. Sorry that once again, YouTube wipes it's hands clean of copyright hitmen.
HOW DARE YOU DISS THE TWISTER DODGE RAM!! I still want the model from this movie
I'm sorry but the first scene is not epic, it's ridiculous. The dad getting carried away as if being gently lifted by an harness, with that fake-ass scream… how even kids don't just collapse into giggles I'll never know.
"no you had a crush on Helen hunt"
Dude, its been 30 years since I first saw Helen, and I still have a crush on her and always will! She is beautiful!
When I say that this movie was my favorite movie growing up, I am not exaggerating at all. I watched it so many times as a young kid; I was born like two weeks before it came out in theaters in '96. I literally ended up with a CD of the score and soundtrack. My marching band used part of the Mancina score in a show when I was in high school, and everybody knew that I was the Twister kid stoked to have it there. Bill Paxton's loss genuinely hurt, and I'm truly sad that he's not still here. I'm a bit apprehensive about the new version/sequel/remake? but we've still got the original.
I am also not over the Jeep. I will never be over the Jeep.
The Core is such an underrated movie – do it!
Twisters was great! There wasn't a great update to 'Rusty' but Tyler is not bad.
Not only did Michael Crichton write it, but if you're a fan of Sledge Hammer, the lead lady co-wrote it with him
@12:18 – You totally missed an opportunity here: "a SHARKNADO-sense!" 😂
PLEASE do the core!
please i’m begging you, do chicken little
21:00 COW!
Yes, you need to do Minority Report!
Also, I would give anything to have the meal around the table with this crew. That food always looks amazing.
