‘Everybody has focused only on Israel’s security,’ leaving the Palestinians aside says Diana Buttu

Diana Buttu, a political analyst and former spokesperson for the Palestinian Liberation Organization, joins Andrea Mitchell to explain the plight that Palestinians have faced in both Gaza and the West Bank and how it relates to the current conflict between Hamas and Israel. “The problem is that I don’t think that this is put in its proper political context. This isn’t just a war. This is actually an occupation that has gone on now for 56 years,” Buttu says. “The sad reality is that for all of these years, everybody has focused only on Israel’s security, leaving aside anything when it comes to Palestinians, and Palestinians have lived in such insecurity over the course of the past 56 years.”

  2. There's no "occupation." Israel is a legal state, with a Jewish majority. It is intolerable for Muslims to live in a society in which there are Jews in positions of authority over Muslims. Muslims have been at war to eliminate the Jews for the past 100 years. Losing a war meant to exterminate another people does not make Muslims into victims.

  3. I also agree!! Palestinians civilians are paying for what Hamas has done. In viewing the media covering the attack it gives the impression of one sided narrative. I’m sure the Palestinians civilians didn’t know about Hamas attack, yet Israel bombed all those civilian buildings killing thousands. It’s sad to see Israel’s reaction equal to what Hamas has done. I’m sure Hamas wanted Israel to react that way to get Palestinians to take arms against Israel. I hope something is worked out and no further occupation grab by Israel.

  4. I don’t think Israel is an innocent country and no is not justifiable what Gaza did but Gaza is pretty much a concentration camp that gets missiles here and there by Israel so both countries commit war crimes

  5. This is the biggest bunch of BS I have ever heard coming from an American so called News Agency. …Israel has not gone into homes and snatched toddlers and teenagers and beheaded them and tortured them and burned them alive!! So get your FACTS STRAIGHT ANDREA.. This is one of the most disingenuous interviews I have ever witnessed. I feel for the Palestinian people, I really do, but comparing this terrorists attack to everyday living is STUPID at best.. And the AMERICAn people are not STUPID!! HOW about reporting the truth and get out of your "feels" for a change.

  6. WELL, THE MEDIA AND PALESTINE ARE NOT TAKING ABOUT THE POOR BABIES THAT WERE BEHEADED!!!!!! FAMILIES HAVE BEEN HOSTAGE, AND KILLED INFRONT OF THEIR CHILDREN. ISRRAEL LAND WAS GIVEN TO THEM. THEREFOR THEY WILL DEFEND THEIR LAND. PALESTINIANS SHOULD NOT SUPPORT THAT TERRORISTS GROUP.

  7. The Palistenians should gave gotten rid of Hamas yrs ago. Unless you support having rockets launched from your childrens schools. Since its been happening for 20 yrs, i think they support Hamas. They've rejected peace all my life.

  8. Palestinians enabled and harbored the terrorists. Palestinians are responsible for the terror group. Palestinians are being endangered by the same terror group they supported and believed the terror group will only harm the Israelis and keep Palestinians safe. Palestinians have been the comrades of Hamas.

  9. This seems to be about HAMAS, not Palestinians. The war on terror was about Isis and Al Quade, not Iraq or Afghanistan. Making a "club" about killing everyone who disagrees with you does not constitute a "people" or a "country".

  10. Israel supported Hamas to defeat the PLO. Israel has infiltrators in Gaza. They (the Israeli fascist government). Yes, it is a brutal colonization and occupation of their legitimate land!

  11. BOYCOTT MSNBC. THEY QUIETLY SUSPENDED THEIR MUSLIM ANCHORS LIKE ALI VELSHI, MEHDI AND AYMAN. THE NEWS IS ONLY ABOUT FAVOURING ISRAEL, WHY THEY NEEDED TO BE SUSPENDED? I DO NOT GET IT WHY THEY NEEDED TO SUSPEND THEM FOR GIVING THE NEWS ON REALITY OF APARTHEID.

  12. Americans don't care about Palestinians life at all. Their policies is one sided. They want to cover for Israel occupation and apartheid system by all means.

  13. Of course, the security of Israelis is more important than the safety of terrorists who raise even their little children to be terrorists. I am Turkish and I know the Palestinians well because of the treachery they have committed against us. God help the people of Israel.

  14. Half of the Palestine population are children under the age of 18, 75 percent are under the age of 25. These are very young people born under a system of apartheid. Israel consistently forces them to leave their homes and then occupies their lands. They are well aware that when they leave Gaza with nowhere to go, they cannot return. The UN report dated right before the war outlines numerous human rights violations on Palestine people including a 13 year old child held in solitary confinement for years, probably for throwing a rock at a legal protest. Our journalists and our government need to present both sides of the conflict without the attitude and contempt they are showing for innocent people with no rights, no power, and now no food, water, electricity or safe shelter for 11 days at this point. Both sides are victims of terrorism, Palestine has been victims of Israel for half a century. Israel is too afraid of a free Palestine because they have victimized them for so long. They want to build and profit on land that does not legally belong to them. Israel wants genocide and that did not start with a Hamas attack. Our media spread a fake story about Hamas beheading babies but wont talk about the fact that Israel is currently killing babies and children with impunity. Why should Israel garner so much support and more weapons when they refuse to abide by international laws of humanity?

  15. Let the 1,300 massacred jews be mourned before pushing your political views down their family's throat. Let the community grieve. Thats the same with for both sides.
