Every time the Arctic Monkeys changed their sound

The Arctic Monkeys have experimented sonically on nearly every record – but three of their albums in particular have been pivotal in advancing their sound: Humbug, AM & Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino.

  1. Every album after Favourite Worst Nightmare was a “grower” to me… took me a few spins to come around to it, a few more spins with each subsequent album, too. But I think I’ve just come around to ‘The Car’ today, listening to it in headphones and really paying attention to the lyrics. This is why Arctic Monkeys will forever be my favorite band… there’s always something to discover and finding ties back to the beginning is the best part.

  2. TLSP have some of the most beautifully intricate lyrics EVER, not all of the songs are incredible but the ones that are, REALLY are.. Aviation is a good first listen if you haven't gone in on them yet. My Mistakes Were Made for You is the best. really, REALLY good.

  3. I've grown to utterly adore them. Growing up, I found them really annoying, but in my early 20s I worked at an entertainment venue in Sheffield and just happened to be stewarding a Last Shadow Puppets gig on the 2016 Everything… tour and they blew my socks off. Alex, in particular, was such a charismatic performer. The atmosphere was incredible. So I enjoyed TLSP for a while and then Tranquility Base came out…and like most people, it went over my head, but I started putting Arctic Monkeys live shows on whenever I was doing anything productive and found them so energising. Once heard 'AM' described as "sexual tension in music form" and I think that's a pretty spot on interpretation of the mood of that record. Listened to that on repeat in 2019, then revisited TBHC earlier this year and it's become one of my favourite albums of all time. Totally transports me somewhere else. I love how wordy it is and I love the way Alex's brain works. It's just pure delight from start to finish. Alex's vocal transformation is endlessly interesting to me, too! Loving 'The Car' more with every listen. I'm weirdly so proud of them and genuinely excited for their progression as a band.

  4. I’m sorry but I just think the last two albums are just so far away it isolates a lot of the fan base. I have so many friends and myself that absolutely love the albums up until the last two, it’s not even a mix of fast and heavy with slow and dreamy either. It’s all this pseudo-Beatles thing and no one can be the Beatles either…..

  5. I love how they have evolved in the last album, it's a great one, however I really hate AM, for me it's the worst they have done, it doesn't feel like them, I mean, Alex sounds like an american wannabe, not in the funny way trying to be one of the strokes, but a guy pretending to be someone who's he's not. I completely agree with the parody comment. Great video man!

  6. THE BIGGEST THING I hated back in the 00' was bands that DIDNT progress snd they all sounded the same.
I myself LOVE progress I am a HUGE flaming lips fan. But if you listen to them.then to now it's a huge

  7. I'm glad that Arctic Monkeys just exists, their musical-changing-tones just works as the human evolves, sometimes you feel energic, sometimes you feel lonely, sometimes you feel nostalgic, and there's an Arctic Monkeys tune just for that exact moment. they got you covered.
I discovered them in 2014, and was one of the best things that I've ever made. And I still keep listening to their music, old 'n new, they just work just fine for me, but I'm still engaged more with the 2013 era, and some of the 2018 ones.
also at 8:39, fireside, probably my favorite one and one of the most underrated Monkeys song.

  8. I remember when Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino and I did not like it. I was only like 17 or 18 at the time (im now turning 22 in 5 days) , then a year later I skimmed through the album againand I began to / did like the most popular songs on the album (Star treatment and four stars out of Five the most). Another half a year or year later I took a listen again and I now love that album, maybe even slightly more than AM because its just very differrent from most other music so its a standout song or listening experience when you listen to one of the songs or the album. I was very excited when There’d Better Be a Mirrorball popped up on my new release playlist.

  9. Yessss Alexandra Saviors album made me really take a step back and think that this path to The Car wasn’t as steep as Monkeys fans really thought. I didn’t love the car, and wish they’d hang out with Josh Homme more – but your other video made me appreciate TBHC more than I ever did so gonna have to check back in to the new record

  10. John Lennon once said he didn’t wanna be playing “She Loves You” in his 60’s. Doubt Alex Turner wants to be playing Dance Floor in his 60’s either. People change & so do good bands.

  11. I really like that the arctic monkeys keep on moving and changing, even tho they’ll miss sometimes. The last album isn’t one of my favorites, despite having some pretty good songs, but the leaning into french pop and the orchestra that “got them all sorounded” is enough to give them a chance every time… and to keep an eye for their next move. Love the video, as always, love the style, the research ant the narrative.

  12. I feel bad for people who don't know or listen about Arctic Monkeys. They are criminally underrated and one of the biggest band in this generation. They are also phenomenal live and TBH+C is my favorite of their albums.

  13. Watching this video makes me realize that AM have a very similar path to the fratellis, albeit way more successful. They’ve both successfully explored new genres over the years, with am’s last album having a 70s vibe and the fratellis settling on the 60s. The singers even sound similar
