European Welsh, a National renewal

In this video we will look at how Wales changed when the Norman French battered their way into Wales, forming marches around Lordships and then intermarrying with Welsh royalty and warring with them. Wales split into what nearly became two nations, but which instead fused together in an explosive new culture, both in literature and in politics.

This is based on the book, When Was Wales? for which this is part of a series – each able to be watched independently with full enjoyment, taking you through Welsh History.

  1. I think the title of this video should be taken with a good dose of sarcasm against the Norman concoction. Well done Ben! Blessings from South "Germany." Thanks for keeping your Welsh – Cymrw history alive.

  3. Interesting to hear Gerallt Gymro mentioned at this stage. Through Merched y Wawr, I was involved in assembling a collage, which was displayed at the National Eisteddfod depicting Gerallt Gymro standing in front of Barry Castle. Afterwards the collage was presented to Barry Town Council where it is still on display today.

  4. As a Cymro I can feel much sympathy for the Saxon collapse and enslavement to the French. It’s kind of ironic that we were the only ones from old Britain that survived, fused and flourished in independence? Doubtless,we can be very proud of our ancestors resistance to the Norman war machine in this age of castles and cathedrals? .’Dros rhyddid collasant eu gwaed ‘ 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿👍 Diolch am y wybodaeth a gobeithio nes di neud hi adra’n sâff ?

  5. You mention how Wales had two seperate identities during the Middle Ages. I have been told that today there are two dialects of Welsh spoken. Are these dialects divided along the medieval boundaries? Importantly if some-one learns Welsh today, what dialect are they taught?
