  1. Être fort comme un Turc (‘to be strong like a turk’):

This expression originates in the 15th century when the Turks had a reputation for being strong, almost unbeatable warriors due to their numerous victories. At the time, the Ottoman Empire ruled large parts of south-east Europe, north Africa and western Asia. It is said that François I, King of France, was gifted Turkish armour by Suleiman the Magnificent (the tenth and most famous sultan of the Ottoman Empire) during their alliance. When he wore it, he is said to have exclaimed: “Here I am now, strong as a Turk!”.

  3. Sweden's borders at 6:00 are wrong. Sweden only gained Trondhjem Len at the Treaty of Roskilde. You have also marked the northern part of Bergenhus Len as a part of Sweden. One can also argue that Denmark's greatest extent was around 1613, when Denmark owned Norway from Finnmark to Bohus Len, as well as Skåne, Halland and Blekinge. In 1782 Denmark of course had Greenland, but Greenland isn't shown on the map.

  4. I might be wrong on this, but wouldn't the Kingdom of Ruthenia a better alternative for Ukraine? I'm not to sure on it's size, but it could get close.
Other then that, I am unsure why Terra Mariana is an alternative for Latvia, I would, if forced, only call it the biggest extent of Livonia.

  5. Countries at their greatest extent

    skip to greece

    Macedonian empire 😐

(Modern Greece is a direct descendent of the Byzantine empire, so Justinian’s empire is its greatest extent. It has almost nothing in common with the Macedonian empire at all)

  6. Italy doesn't have the same language, culture, government, food and christian denomination is still considered as a direct descendant of Rome is as weird to me as calling Afghanistan greco-bactrian descendants.

  7. If Italy can claim Rome I feel like it’d be more fair for Greece to claim the Byzantium? Also there were more than one Serbian Empires, though short lived it was much larger than the one you’ve shown.

  8. 2:18 I don’t get it. So what were the Reichskommisoriate? I don’t get why colonies with tons of land that may or may not be explored can count all the way but not occupied territory.

3:27 Offered to who? By whom? Was Austria or Germany offered Alaska in return for Liechtenstein becoming a Russian outpost?

5:10 1914? Wasn’t Russia’s greatest extent right before it sold Alaska?
