Episode 72: Jack Wagner monorail spiels

On this episode, I present some versions of Jack Wagner (the voice of Disney!) being your monorail host. I combined them with current video I made on a recent trip. It gives you a perspective on what it used to be like to ride the highway in the sky.

The audio portions are intended as “fair use” so you can get a sense of what the monorail narration was like in the 70s.

Included clips are:

• the express monorail from the transportation and ticket center to the magic kingdom, and back to the TTC

• a Spanish & English resort loop version from 1979

• a clip of the French and English version used in 1978

There are a few photos used in the video that are watermarked, and attribution is given for them. Other photos come from the web, and have unknown attribution.

Any photos are included for educational purposes, to set the context for the show.

All videos were taken by me.

Please note that I provide some info about what’s in this video at 20:22

  1. Even though “spiel” does have an existing definition in English dating from the late 19th century meaning “long extravagant speech” or a “sales pitch”, the actual reason may be due to the German design of the original Alweg monorails at Disneyland. There was a button labeled “Spiel”on the driver’s control panel, German for “Play” which triggered the next announcement cued on the tape loop.

  2. Wow! I notice you had to have a hand stamp to reboard. Was the monorail considered to be “inside” the Magic Kingdom in those days? Guess they had to change that and move the turnstiles to make the Monorail external to the parks when EPCOT opened in ‘82?
