Ep.2.12: "The Eyes Have It" with Robert O'Reilly

Glory to you… and your HOUSE! That’s right – Season 2, episode 12 is here. Connor, Dominic, and Erica have a wonderful conversation with Robert O’Reilly, best known to us as Gowron, smote Chancellor of the Klingon Empire.

We discuss Robert’s New York City childhood, his Irish family, his failures with carpentry, and how being bad with wood led him to be great at acting. Irish wakes. University of Ohio. Accents. Making it to LA. Writing poetry and short stories. Fighting with his friend JG Hertzler. And of course, booking Star Trek and the birth of “those eyes!” Wash is looking better. Erica gets some fan questions in, this week’s Star Trek Trivia gets chopped because of time, and Robert plays “Stuck on a Deserted Island with Connor Trinneer.” It’s another awesome conversation and another amazing Star Trek icon having some laughs. Scoop some Bloodwine and join us! FOR THE GLORY OF THE KLINGON EMPIRE!!

  1. I love hearing the back stories of each of these talented men and women. It seems that once an actor takes on role in any Star Trek series….they gain a family. Shuttlepod is sort of like the old TV show Cheers…we everyone knows your name. I look forward to Sunday because of Connor, Dominic and Erica.

  2. What a fun episode! I especially loved Robert’s two very different animal stories – the one with the crocodile and the one with the fly.

Thanks for the great work to the Shuttlepod team! Keep it up!

  3. I think ole 'frakes' will be a great guest as I am sure he will have some great stories and in terms of other actors -> directors there is Rob duncan Mcneil and roxann from Voyager.
Wil, I have seen on his own podcasts, Table Top and Michael Rosenbaum's (smallville) podcast … might depend on the way that the conversation goes, he's always open and talkative.
My other thought is Terry Farrell but after the Rick Berman interview I am unsure if Connor and Dominic are ready for the alternative view of Star Trek producers that she might bring … ?

  4. 01:08:55 I know the movie he's talking about. It's called "The Last Hurrah". Spencer Tracy plays the mayor of an unnamed New England city who is running for his fifth term. He's an anti-establishment, man-of-the-people politician who connives to get his way. He's also much hated by the powers-that-be and by most conservatives.

He loses the election and later has a heart-attack. On his deathbed, he's surrounded by friends and family members. He closes his eyes, hinting that he has passed away. One of his relatives who despises him can't resist getting in one final dig and says (paraphrasing), "He's made his peace with God. But if he had it to do all over again, he would have done it very, very differently."

There is a brief pause, then Spencer Tracy opens his eyes and says, "Like hell I would!"

    edit: Made a few corrections.

  5. man this is a great podcast, my first forays into trek many moons ago was with enterprise and the next generation and it's pretty cool to see a podcast like this around and hear some of the wicked behind the scenes stuff. one side note your terran empire counterparts were freaking hilarious! so different but cool at the same time

  6. My wife and I finished binging Enterprise tonight. VERY disappointed that they killed Trip. Also didn’t think they needed to bring Next Gen into it. Kinda took away from all that they accomplished over four seasons.

Really, really enjoyed the series. Now grieving the loss of Trip…..

  7. I look forward to every episode of The Shuttlepod Show as it has become my morning ritual. The house is quiet, the cat is chilling and I get to drink my coffee and absorb every word. Keep them coming!
