In the sixteenth episode of the Prometheus series, The Film Symbologist continues the analysis of Ridley Scott’s 2012 science fiction film. In this installment, I take a deeper dive into the nature, purpose, and effects of the black goo. What is it? What does it do? Why were the engineers bringing it to Earth?

  1. The last real deacon blood that is on the mural was used to seed earth. That’s why they worshipped the original deacon. Since it was the last of the real blood they try to remake it but they made a bad version, the can’t reproduce without it. There basically all clones. Original deacon blood the good black go synthetic deacon blood is the bad. It’s plain as day.

  2. I'm glad they kept the black goo and references to Prometheus in Alien Romulus as I was worried it would be a reboot and ignore all the other alien films; ignoring the AVP films is fine with me. I love Prometheus and hope there will be another film to wrap up on the Engineers and David. For people complaining David created the Xenomorph, he is did what the Engineers were trying to do based on their work and he didn't create the creatures from scratch as they preexisted thousands of years ago as seen in the mural in the Engineer base in Prometheus which resembles the Deacon.

  3. I think its life, in a literal form, its the formula for life, engineers being the purest stable form of its evolutionary outcome. And xenos being the purest form left free to evolve as it chooses. (Perfect form)

  4. I think engineers seed life in the universe, and when its flawed, they eradicate it, the species we see David exterminate in covenant is a good outcome for the engineers, and humanity is or too flawed in resisting evolution or its not yet ready for the engineers to approve. Due to the Prometheus finding out the deadline set by the engineers we didn't meet the deadline/cut. So we were going to be killed. So the engineers can continue seeding life, and choosing who is deserving to continue.

  5. I believe Holloway would have been very different than Fifield due to how they came into contact with the virulent. I say this solely on the fact Holloway skin is like soil thats been deprived of moisture, cracks in fissures as clay seperates to retain what moisture it can which slowly breaks down into dust, stardust.
This series is amazing, loving this material!

  6. These videos are fascinating & really do give a new perspective. I have to say that I was critical of the Med Pod recovery time/activity on my initial viewing of the film, however, after having undergone keyhole surgery to remove a large benign tumour last year, I was sent home within 3 hours of waking up & was back to moderate normal activity after a couple of days (there aren't any obvious scars, either) – if this is possible in 2023, something this far in the future seems entirely possible & likely (with or without the goo!)
Excellent research & dedication in this series!
