Badd Medicine here and its Pride & Prejudice reaction time
In this adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved novel, Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) lives with her mother, father and sisters in the English countryside. As the eldest, she faces mounting pressure from her parents to marry. When the outspoken Elizabeth is introduced to the handsome and upper-class Mr. Darcy (Matthew MacFadyen), sparks fly. Although there is obvious chemistry between the two, Darcy’s overly reserved nature threatens the fledgling relationship.

Now you need to watch the miniseries with Colin Firth!
The book is also very funny. When a book opens with “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man of good fortune must be in want of a wife.” you know you’re in for a good time. It’s almost as much a satire and a character study as it is a romance.
Now I can't wait to see y'all react to Emma 2020 starring Anya Taylor Joy, it's another very comedic and great Jane Austen adaptation!
“You are my density….” I’m dead!! 😅
Since you've watch Pride and Prejudice now, I would rec Little Women for some other time as well.
The first time I really enjoyed the story, was by watching the YouTube series "The Lizzie Bennet Diaries".
They modernised the story & told it through vlogs.Because it is kinda Lizzies Video Diarie you don't see most things, but a lot of characters come in & help her tell the story (through little skits for example).
And I remeber a lot ofite storys she told, where she spend time with Darcy.
I think it came short in this movie, because there weren't enough time for that.
I know, that this is probably not your thing, but I highly recommend "The Lizzie Bennet Diaries".
Book is so much better and my favourite version of this book is the BBC series which shows more …… I don't think you can get this story into an hour and half to 2 hours of film
🌹Keira Knightley never looked better! Really enjoyed this version of P&P.
This is one of my absolute favorite movies, and I’m so happy I could watch you react to it. ❤
Now since you’ve watched this, y’all need to watch Austenland for some laughs! Jennifer Coolidge is great in that!!
Mr Darcys home is actually Chatsworth House in Derbyshire and its utterly breathtaking! It's one of my favorite places to visit
Just sweet 🥰 Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen together make my heart just hmmmmmm.
– a love affair without marriage was still taboo at the beginning of the 19th century. People who entered into such relationships were socially ostracized and excluded. Likewise, such an act meant the social ruin of a family. That's why it was all the more important to find a marriage partner back then .
– since the Bennets' inheritance can only be passed on to male family members, it is of great importance to Mrs. Bennet in particular to marry off her daughters to rich men as soon as possible.
…so crazy from today's point of view.
I loved your guy's reaction!!! I love that you can give any movie a fair chance. To address Oak's concerns, marrying for love is still a relatively new concept that wasn't the goal until well into the 1900s so this story really needs to be located within the time period.
Darcy's house is Chatsworth which does have a fountain and water features! I can't remember how it works but they do explain it, I think it's pumps and gravity…
And yes, they absolutely interact a lot more in the books – she stays at the Bingley's for a few weeks at minimum, and eats with him/talks with him daily. Same for when they meet at Lady Catherine's and for when she runs into him at his own house (Pemberley). What the film gave 1-2 scenes the book at the very least implies multiple days of ending up in each other's company.
Ngl, I can quote the proposal scene by memory. Mathew's voice is divine.
The Oak gets it! The book and the 1995 mini series (6, 1hr episodes) shows how Lizzie and Mr Darcy’s relationship slowly turns from dislike to love over like a 2 year period. I don’t know if you ever would but I would recommend watching the series with Colin Firth. It’s sooooooooo much better then the movie with is an unpopular opinion.
Fun fact, it was the original owners of the house that we see here as being Pemberley , Chatsworth House ,that first introduce the idea of having visitors. They gave orders that when they were away ( and they were away often in their other houses) the housekeeper could and should show the house to visitors that asked to see it. They were filthy rich and art patrons and believed that everyone should be able to enjoy art and the beauty of the park.
To this day the Cavendish family are art patrons and each generation has added sculptures and paintings to the collection.
Another fun fact one of JFK's sister married one the eldest son of the 10th Duke of Cavendish , but he was killed in battle during WWII and his younger brother who later became the Duke married one of the Mitford sisters.
So it became a trend at the time, visitors would pay a small fee to the Housekeeper for a guided tour and many people did this. In the book Elizabeth and her aunt and uncle made a tour to all the grand houses of the area – funnily enough in the book they visited Chatsworth House – and her aunt was born and grew up in that area and even knew Darcy's father, so she was very interested in the tour.
Pride and prejudice zombies was a fun watch after see this one lol
OMG, i wasn´t expecting this!!!!
😆As much as I LOVE this version of the book (cinematic masterpiece), I never ever thought I'd ever see this film on your list!! To me Pride & Prejudice usually tends to attract and be genuinely appreciated by Period Film Nerds & women, neither of which I consider y'all😂This was a great reaction, really really glad you enjoyed the quippy writing, period sensibilities and humor that abounds throughout this story!
Considering how much you like the Pirates films (and even referenced Knightly as being in them) I'm a little surprised you didn't recognize Tom Hollander from them as well (he played Mr. Collins in this film, Cutler Beckett in Pirates).
Though I realize y'all have seen many period films, I just don't consider you Period Nerds that can't get enough of them. I do, however, have a most wonderful 'piece' you may just absolutely adore and hopefully will be echoed in the comments or replies to this one.
It's not a film or a syndicated show, but in fact an 8 part Mini-Series called The Pillars of the Earth. The cast is mind blowing, the writing is stupendous (Ken Follett who does cameos in all his books made into films), gorgeous Historical context and breathtaking sets. It was the film (I call it a film because I usually binge it all in a day) that introduced me to Eddie Redmayne and brought in old favorites like Rufus Sewell and Ian McShane, who plays one of the best villains captured on film in this piece imo. Pillars is also the film that returned to me Matthew McFadyen (who plays Mr. Darcy in P&P) and is one of my favorite characters ever in all the films I've ever seen where he plays Prior Philip of Kingsbridge.
I hope someone on your Patreon's list is reading this and decides to throw it down over there, though I follow y'all over there I'm not a paying member so I realize standard comments here are sort of secondary although y'all are ROCKSTARS about including us!
As a side note, if you ever get on an Ian McShane kick (I mean who HASN'T?!) I highly suggest Deadwood the series (western) if ever y'all find time, even if it's a personal thing and not for YTube. Amazing show. Amazing.
Ok gonna watch the wrap up at the end now, hope this finds all y'all well, in good spirits and looking forward to tomorrow!
YOU GUYS HAVE TO REACT TO EMMA!! PLEASEEEEE!!
I’m so glad that you reacted to this movie, it has so much humour, romance, and societal customs from such a different time period! I would absolutely love for you to watch Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. It’s such a left field take on this classic story.
Well… if you want the version that most closely follows the book, then the 1990s Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle 6-part miniseries is the one for you. 😉
Guyys! Please watch Bridgerton!✨
Great movie
The Oak…Come on man, think historically. You knock Austen's characters because they don't fit your conventions in your contemporary time? Dude. Read the book like you did with Potter. It's much better. They did spend substantial time together. They had their own "Pride & Prejudice" in their hearts that they had to overcome. Darcy's letter is the turning point in Elizabeth's heart where she learned how blinded she was by her prejudice against Darcy. You can do better and think deeper bro.
I hope you guys do more period films ! 🙌
If you guys liked this then you should watch Sense & Sensibility (1995) with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet, it's my favorite Jane Austen movie!
It's one of my favorites ❣️
You might be able to detect from my username and pfp that im a huge jane austen fan. this is not my favorite P&P adaptation. I like everyone in it and the thing that made me the happiest was that the actors in the roles were actually pretty close to their character ages for once. But. It is sooo condensed. A lot the Austen's best dialogue is hacked up into fragments and you really do get no sense of how much they are thrown together and how gradually their feelings for each other develop. My personal favorite period adaptation is the 1995 miniseries, which is about 5 hours long so they can take their time with it. My favorite modern adaptation is the YT series The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, which is phenomenal and won an emmy but was filmed and released basically in real time over the course of a year (which is the timeline of the book) so it's like over 700 hours.
Would a longer format with more of the real interactions between Lizzy and Darcy satisfy Oak's modern sensibilities on romance? Ehhh? IDK. Not everything is for everyone and, as someone who absolutely adores Austen, that's ok – I am not offended by that in the least. If he wants to take a stab at the book or one of the deeper adaps, I encourage that just to see if it makes a difference. The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, while quite long as a whole, each episode ranges from 3m-10m so it's easy to get thru a couple and leave it for the next time. They start off feeling like a silly personal vlog and then grow to be incredibly emotional. But – i don't consider this a spoiler since you know they get together – Lizzie and Darcy do not get married at the end, they just become an official couple as that is much more realistic for a modern story so that might appeal to Oak more.
Anyway. As someone who has read the book many times and seen almost every adaptation… that's my take.
so happily surprised to see this on my subscription list! before i watched you guys i said hmm it’s been a couple years since i’ve seen the movie, let’s do a refresher viewing before the reaction. what a delightful decision 😊
edit: oh! you should check out “atonement” soon as well – same director, gorgeously shot, another keira starring role, WWII time period.
Little Women (2019) would be an awesome choice after this
Haha
Oak, you're thinking too much on this one.
Yes, the behaviors in this film are absolutely problematic in the modern era. No disagreement there.
But yeah, this was the way it was.
People don't go on dates back then
Jane Austen's writing is a lot more sarcastic than people would think, for a romance. The first line of Pride & Prejudice is "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of wife." The whole concept is mocking the fact that people meet these rich dudes and assume it'll be their daughter who gets the fairytale ending, as if the rich guy might not be a jerk (like Mr. Darcy appears to be).
Someone once said – I forget who – that Jane Austen writes her books as if she's talking to reader and we're both having a great joke, like Austen gives you a wink, bc the characters take it all so seriously, but the narration will just *go off*.
This film isn't entirely accurate to the book, but it does get the basics of the plot. I think the only thing missing from this film that I would've liked is a better understanding of why Lydia running away is so bad. I was surprised you guys seemed to really get it, though, so kudos to you XD
In English polite society, a woman being alone with a man outside of her family was a big NOPE. If a woman went as far as to willfully go away with him – no matter what happened, everyone is going to think that the woman had sexual relations and is, essentially, damaged goods. She can't be married off after that. Since Lydia is 15 years old and was never properly parented (which Mr. Bennet doesn't realize until it's far too late), she most likely doesn't understand the gravity of the situation and will have to live with what she decided as a kid for the rest of her life. Beyond that, having a woman in the family who has committed such a heinous act as to be sexually active (whether she did or not, the fact that people think she did is what matters) means that the entire family is a scandal. What if the other daughters have done the same thing? It's so taboo that it would be a miracle if any of the Bennet sisters get married after the scandal.
The Bennet family is saved purely due to the money and influence Mr. Bingley and – most of all – Mr. Darcy. Scandal or not, Mr. Bingley wants to be with Jane and has the finances to take the hit. Mr. Darcy tries his damnedest to patch up the disaster so it'll cause the Bennets the least damage, so they can still get married. He doesn't know Lizzie has feelings for him and is trying to ensure that she, and her sisters, will have the freedom to marry. It's very selfless and sweet, and his character growth in the novel is one of my favorite things.
I love watching people react to Pride & Prejudice who aren't straight women bc, while I'm a women, definitely not straight, and I think it's such a great story and you don't have to think Mr. Darcy is sexy (like, why) to adore and appreciate the wonderful writing and the thought put into the characters.
Another fun version of this is Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Oak,
Dating started at the turn of the 20th century.
In the book they do go for long walks
The book is a lot more detailed
One of my favorite movies 😊
I keep forgetting the US ending exists. I quite prefer the film without that scene but it's neat that the option is there I guess.
Cool reaction guys. Really enjoyed it. Wish you guys watch bride and prejudice, the Indian version of this movie
MY FAVORITE REACT CHANNEL WATCHING MY FAVORITE MOVIE OMGGGGG
The proposal scene between Mr. Bigley and Jane Bennett was highly emotional to play for both actors. Rosamund Pike and Simon Woods had been together for 2 years until Simon came out as gay.
A lot was indeed left out of the book. And this is also why the adaptation is not a favourite of mine.
And they did spend time together even if not alone because that would have been really frown upon. When her sister is sick they stay there for several weeks and they see each other everyday and engage in conversation often, while visiting Lady de Burg they spent a lot of time together and they got to know each other much better and while she is visiting her aunt's home village near his house. Visits like these lasted weeks because travelling was expensive and took so long, so visits were usually no less than 4 weeks at least.
Darcy was surprised by her wit, her intelligence, her education, she was refined and very well mannered but very different from the women that he was used to, he also knows that she refused Collins who is a buffoon and an idiot, so he knows she is not after a husband by any means, his sister is very shy and insecure and Elizabeth is very kind to her and protective too and when he meets her aunt and uncle he immediately engages with them because they are nothing like her parents, they are both very knowledgeable and polite and Elizabeth when visiting him in his property discovers that all the servants and people in the village adore him because he is a very kind and attentive man who cares for his tenants and treats everyone with much respect, something she had not perceived from his previous behaviour when she first met him.
When he chases her sister Lydia and Wickham and pays a very large amount to force them to marry ,he does it knowing fully well that she does not love him but he does it anyway knowing that all 5 sisters would be disgraced and he doesn't want that for her or for her sister Jane ( whom he finally understood was very much in love with his friend and was just very shy ) and Elizabeth sees that as an act of selflessness and good character, reinforcing in her mind that he is a very good man.
