We’ve all thought about how awesome it would be to have a public race track available to us in the UK… it turns out, we’ve already got one and have done for decades!

Oliver’s mount in Scarborough is a race track made up of public roads that are open all year round. You are able to do a full lap of the circuit in your car or on your motorcycle, and jolly day out it is too.
It sounds very similar to the Nurburgring in Germany however there are no tolls to drive on the track.

The catch…? Well, there’s a speed limit of course so sensible driving only please but as you navigate your way round, you’ll soon discover that 30mph is more than enough.

In this video, I’ll look at the history of the track and why it was created, we’ll examine the track layout as it is today and there’s a start to finish lap to round things off nicely.

  1. This used to be a stage on the annual Mintex rally…..pretty sure it was run in the other direction as I remember the steep downhill into the hairpin was pretty challenging – especially in frosty/foggy weather!
    Great to drive though.

  2. We watched the RAC rally tackle Oliver’s Mount in 1975 ( I think) I’am pretty certain the cars went the opposite way around to your video though? Watching Roger Clark power under the foot bridge in top gear to then stand on the brakes for the hairpin remains a fabulous memory. Great Vid

  3. This should me re-purposed as an annual self propelled 4 wheeler competition. Any 4 wheel design, fastest around 5 laps, but no external fuel source, or charge allowed at start. Basically a wheeled bicycle race i guess… maybe with small sail & solar to help on the uphill?

  4. Drove around here a couple of times. Can have a bit of a play if you know there's nothing else on the track.Never seen the bikes using it but seen the RAC and Mintex rallies use it years ago when it would be the only "road" stage on the events.Quattros,6R4s,MkII Escorts at full pelt were a sight to behold.

  5. Bloody brilliant man! A stand alone piece about this iconic track that I'm sure you know, if you've been to watch bikes race there, is epic to spectate at, let alone ride around!
The sidecars cutting the grass on the exit of second of the esses is a must see, the solo bikes are almost leaning on the fence at that point! ha great photo opp
I was hoping there was 'hot' lap in there somewhere as well haha great work again 👍🏼
