We’ve all thought about how awesome it would be to have a public race track available to us in the UK… it turns out, we’ve already got one and have done for decades!
Oliver’s mount in Scarborough is a race track made up of public roads that are open all year round. You are able to do a full lap of the circuit in your car or on your motorcycle, and jolly day out it is too.
It sounds very similar to the Nurburgring in Germany however there are no tolls to drive on the track.
The catch…? Well, there’s a speed limit of course so sensible driving only please but as you navigate your way round, you’ll soon discover that 30mph is more than enough.
In this video, I’ll look at the history of the track and why it was created, we’ll examine the track layout as it is today and there’s a start to finish lap to round things off nicely.

It's like an English Bathurst.
Any speed cameras there? 😉
This used to be a stage on the annual Mintex rally…..pretty sure it was run in the other direction as I remember the steep downhill into the hairpin was pretty challenging – especially in frosty/foggy weather!
Great to drive though.
David Jefferies. I am so grateful that I saw that lad traverse the jumps that are now named after him. He was f##king awesome. Something else. He HAD to drop the front wheel in order to brake for Farm Bends…
Would be nicer at 60 mph
After the forge has been closed will this be the next big thing. 92k views so far anyone else having this idea? They'll have to name a corner shenanigans bend.
my dad spent some time here in the 70s, ended up defecating in a carrier bag as the toilets were not built yet.
A family camping trip to Scarborough was never complete without a couple of fast laps of Olivers mount in the old Picasso towing the trailer.
We watched the RAC rally tackle Oliver’s Mount in 1975 ( I think) I’am pretty certain the cars went the opposite way around to your video though? Watching Roger Clark power under the foot bridge in top gear to then stand on the brakes for the hairpin remains a fabulous memory. Great Vid
I've ridden up there during a race day as part of Ride Cymru. Around 50 of us riding up there dressed as Evel Knievel, was great to have a crowd there!
Thank you, you have just created my next silly little road trip! What a great video.
This should me re-purposed as an annual self propelled 4 wheeler competition. Any 4 wheel design, fastest around 5 laps, but no external fuel source, or charge allowed at start. Basically a wheeled bicycle race i guess… maybe with small sail & solar to help on the uphill?
We have similar thing in Poland, check out "hill climb Limanowa" on Youtube!:)
Gotta love Britain. It's not that we don't have a publicly available racetrack, it's just shit
subscribed..thanks for this stuff
What is the speed limit there?
Ulster grand prix track in Dundrod, Northern Ireland is 7.4 miles road race that is 100% public roads.
What an utterly annoying vocal fry affectation this guy has. If you don't know what I mean search "Loudermilk – Season 2, Episode 1" in the cafe scene.
Drove around here a couple of times. Can have a bit of a play if you know there's nothing else on the track.Never seen the bikes using it but seen the RAC and Mintex rallies use it years ago when it would be the only "road" stage on the events.Quattros,6R4s,MkII Escorts at full pelt were a sight to behold.
Ought to replace Silverstone with this one for F1!
I remember fondly: my dad thrashing his Cortina around there some ~40 years ago, on a Sunday drive. (Handbrake-turns around the two tight hairpins!) Thanks!
Bloody brilliant man! A stand alone piece about this iconic track that I'm sure you know, if you've been to watch bikes race there, is epic to spectate at, let alone ride around!
The sidecars cutting the grass on the exit of second of the esses is a must see, the solo bikes are almost leaning on the fence at that point! ha great photo opp
I was hoping there was 'hot' lap in there somewhere as well haha great work again 👍🏼
Oliver's Mount got it's name because Oliver Cromwell's army placed a battery on top of the hill to bombard the castle
Umm I shall keep public roads that are race loops secret!,
Great video…I’ve spent many enjoyable race days there with my family and friends.
Good spot to drift when its snowy n icy. Or so I'm told
loving the GT4 soundtrack song, nostalgia!
What a pretty little track. looks like a fantasy track out of Gran Turismo
edit: I see what you did with moon over the castle 😛
Love the GT audio at the end
You peaked my interest, but now you have my attention!
Love it – let Rip !
If theres a speed limit it ISNT a race track!! People turning up in supercars will be deeply dissapointed. You might as well show up on a fking rickshaw
Now there`s a thing, I had heard of Oliver`s Mount but never knew about the track. Thanks for showing us.
All you need is your mates and a bunch of reeeeaaallly slow motorbikes then youd be racing.
