Episode 108
The first one came aboard in February 2022, the second one a year later. Now the two potato-sized rocks that rode along with Perseverance inside its front wheels have been ejected. Here’s how it happened.
If I get a pebble in my shoe, nobody cares. If the same thing happens on Mars, it's world stage news. "All is relative." – Eustachius Einstein, allegedly.
Just watched Veritasium’s video on new wheel designs. Very interesting. The next rovers may have completely different style wheels not capable of picking up any more hitchhikers.
Thank You Mars Guy! Great explanation of history of those unwanted passengers. They were causing problems in previous missions but now the wheels are robust enough to not take any damage from inside.
Congrats on hitting 30K subscribers! Your channel deserves a least hundred times more! Everybody, let's help Mars Guy, spread the word, share the videos!
The first one came aboard. By the way, I have difficulty communicating because I had a stroke in Broca’s area, the part of the brain that controls speech. 2/8/2021 but I lived again. (My wife helped me compose this.)
Awweee, that's sad, Percy lost a Passenger, well he left a seat for the next "hitchhiker" and apparently that was his destination! Thanks Mr Mars that was a nice ride and a long one too for Mr Potato Head! Great video and great footage!! 🥔😄
Is potatoe!

Hopefully they redesign the inner wheels with a slight crown in the center to encourage debris to slide out easier…
Since this has occurred on many of the rovers, I am surprised the wheels don't have groves that rotate out the debris while driving.
It makes sense to me that the more sand is in the wheel the less is it likely to keep a rock.
🫢 can’t believe we lost Potato 🥔
Rest in peace 🥲

Potato, potatoe. King Edward, or New? 🙃 Why were the wheels designed such that they capture sand/dust, but can't seemingly 'drain' them off?
I was following too close and the d****d thing cracked my windshield when it flew off the wheel. My own fault, I guess. Backing off…..
…I'm still convinced you actually live on Mars.
Thanks for the video!
Obviously a redesigned wheel to prevent foreign objects hitching a ride is needed.
Potato update, thx Mars Guy
Aw man, i’ll miss potato rock
Maybe we can name the next rover "Rocky" It would have been amazing if it had tumbled that rock down enough to expose a fossil. Good stuff MG.
Thank you for another awesome and very enjoyable video ❤❤❤
Thank you Mars Guy

Such a great joy to watch our intrepide robotic explorers do their thing on Mars.
It funny on how such a simple event manage to generate allot of interest
I think the potato on the front wheel was a Russet and the one on the rear is a Yukon Gold.

100% Mars
Have you considered doing any updates on the curiosity mission? Love your work on perseverance

Right
A hitchhikers guide to mars
A vaguely endearing feature indeed. Vaguely.
