  1. Great episode, looking forward to chapter 12 because it's a doozy !
Free actions are a crit mechanic that is dependent on your squad's morale, the better morale the better the chance for free actions.
Also you should also change Narima´s class to her unique hero form ! ( IIRC it was bugged in 1.0 so she did not become a hero unit by itself as she does now )
You have to manually upgraded her, but to do that you first need to downgrade from her standard archer form, all the way down to a militia .
You can then uppgrade her into a swordswoman so you can uppgrade her into her hero form .
Her unique hero form is a better version of the sword master called "blade master" and has some really nice mommy energy just like Diana.
Her special hero class has one of the strongest melee attacks in the game, as well as a decent ranged attack.

And another fun fact, you can actually defeat Beatrix , it's really hard because she has agility for days because of her high level.
Levels give your units extra stats, depending on what type of alignment they have. ( different alignments have different stat growths )

But with the right units ( light infantry like Stefan is best ) or enough bodies to throw at her, she can actually be forced to run away if you use the "aim at leader" command.

You should also at least consider giveing mages a try, especially if you get alot of tech on the left side so you can get the tech that lets mages attack on the first turn .
Without that upgrade, mages do not attack on ambushes or if you fail to "force surrender" because it makes you skip the first turn of combat.

Beatrix is a fully trained mage hero with that tech uppgrade, it's why she can wipe squads without taking damage since almost everyone dies to her one attack.
That said, a few trained mages do about the same AOE damage as her, mages are slow without tech upgrades, and only attack once just like gunpowder units.
But when they do they delate most other units in a single hit, and the trained once like your ice mage have huge AOE attacks that does even more damage.
Mages only seem weak because you haven't seen a squad use more than 1 mage at a time yet, and all your opponent's troops are half your level at this point of the game .

Also most missions only let you field 12-15 squads , so try to focus on making a few good squads instead of alot of small ones.
Every unit takes 10 Capacity ( capacity is based on the Squad leader's Leadership stat ) and every unit also has a hidden "loyalty experience" bar.
Loyalty can make units cost -2 if they are loyal, -1 if they are "committed" +1 if they are "uncommitted" and +2 if they have the "mercenary" status.
The squad leader who captures mission objectives also gets a big bonus to leadership every time they capture one, so if you can you want to let your good squads capture buildings .

The units you buy for gold are all mercenaries outside of the basic recruits, so they start out costing 12 instead of 10. ( but fighting can get them loyalty over time to lower the cost )

But they are also either fully trained and/or have extra perks that make them better than normal recruits
A squads units also get a stacking +2 cost for every unit you add after the first 3. (+2,+4.+6 and so on )
So a loyal unit in a 3-man squad is only going to cost 8, but a mercenary unit in a squad with 6 units is going to cost 16 points.

There are also unique mercenaries that are super powerful, but very rare…. some of them are fairly affordable, but some cost up to 15k
They usually have cooler names than normal units, and have unique text when you look at them in the shop.
the Bazar tents on the battle map always have better stuff to sell than your normal shop , so saving up some gold to buy better things might be a good idea.
