hello long time fan here. I really love your content and your deep dive in comic storyline and lore. that being said i wanted to know if you have thought about doing this for the Authority. ive seen several people attempt trying to explain the team and failing to do so. Given your previous work i think you are best suited to being this great team to light for a whole generation of viewers.
Did they really have to chop his girl up & shove her in the fridge? Sheesh
I know this story gets hate, but I absolutely enjoyed it! Yes, the replacing of long-standing heroes for youngbloods had grown thin, but this was the first time we ever saw a top-tier hero go the way of Anakin Skywalker. The destruction of the Corps, the deaths of Kilowog, Sinestro and even all the Guardians save Ganthet seemed to mark the end of an Era, at the time. The greatest Green Lantern had become the greatest anti-hero. Too bad Green Lantern Rebirth had to undo all of it.
Having your long standing hero be made into a maniacal mass murdering villain so you can make a new protagonist to promote in his place is…certainly a choice. While it retroactively led to good development for Hal I do think this hurt Kyle's image right out of the gate.
Fantastic video! Fascinating as always.
not gonna lie, emerald twilight sounds like a brony-sona… -_-
Its really refreshing to hear someone talk positively about Emerald twilight and the Kyle Rayner era that came after positively for once, as its often lumped into DC's era of big status quo changes without proper planning in the 90s.
As someone who started reading Green lantern during the Geoff Johns era, its hard for me to really understand what it was like to read the comics at the time they came out, so I try to be understanding. I know to people who read the comics as they were current it might have been a lot more frustrating.
As someone who's looking back on them in retrospect though, I love them. I love Kyle, Hal's fall as Parallax, the events that he took part in afterwards, and both Kyle's journey afterwards and Hal's eventual return, its some of my favorite stuff out of DC and I'm not sure I'd even like green lantern nearly as much as I do without it.
Great video! So glad to see more Green Lantern and specifically Kyle Rayner because he’s my favorite lantern! Would love to see more future videos focusing on 90’s/early 2000’s Justice League characters
It should’ve been a complete failure, but Marz really created something special with Emerald Twilight. Not only did it introduce me to GL, but it gave me Kyle Rayner who was MY Green Lantern and one of my favorite characters in all of comics. If not for this giant risk, I would’ve never fallen in love with the GL mythos. Excellent job, Owen. Truly.
Personally I love this story for Kyle and as a good moving point toward how hypocritical the Lantern Corps can actually be. I did feel bad for Hal, but even more so for Kyle's girlfriend as she would become a martyr for "damsels in distress" in comics 24:20.
I remember reading this and feeling a had seen it before, but where?
Then I read Marvel Comics New Universe Starbrand, The Pitt again after years and AHA! DC borrowed heavily from a Marvel book that borrowed heavily from DC!
So what happened to Guy Gardner and John Stewart during this?
My top 10 list of things that ruined Green Lantern:
10. Making him the least effective member of the Justice League unless they need group transport. Snatching his ring every time they don't want him to showboat like it's that easy. And then writing his character to be the "first one in and first one down" so that Batman can be the #1 hero. Again.
9. Repeating the oath in every issue so many times it becomes annoying and to that add the issues where there are multiple oaths which brings me to the next point.
8. Not every color needs a ring. Ultra-violet was truly the last straw.
7. Sinestro's new one-note line about being the greatest lantern in whatever color he happens to be sporting is as tired as a bad anime trope.
6. The movie.
5. The Sinestro Corp recruiting literally every villain and yet somehow this does nothing to make them any more powerful or terrifying.
4. Letting Superboy Prime humiliate Sodam Yat with Ion. This is more about Superboy Prime's meta plot armor, but still. They basically confirmed that the entire Green Lantern Corp is barely able to fly around the sections of the universe they protect, let alone to actually protect them.
3. Giving me false hope that Blackest Night would be the rebirth of my favorite DC franchise of all time and then dashing those hopes to pieces with every book that followed.
2. Killing off Guardians (and random Green Lanterns) is officially a trope.
1. The issue where Green Arrow uses the ring to make an arrow and says (paraphrased) "Does it hurt this much just to make something?" and Green Lantern replies "Every time." That whole line/concept was stolen from Marvel's Wolverine when we found out that his claws pierce his skin every time he uses them so it hurts "every time" which is why the housings were built in the first place. WHY. Why did they feel compelled to even compare the two let alone in such a blatantly copycat way.
DC writing is dead to me. Long live Image comics. Long live Saga.
What I feel is that for those who despise Emerald Twilight for transforming Hal into a mass murder I would say to them did you ever bother reading those books at the time nobody was ever reading them? Why else would DC decide to strip Hal of his ranks in order to invigorate change to the mythos. As a plot thread it evolves the characters. Heck, even the latter columns told the fans that they were warned and that this approach was the only way. Also, how would Geoff and Ethan develop the other Lantern Corps. Imagine Rebirth without Emerald Twilight? How would the mythos have been if you never had that major thread. And if fans even say they could still work their way around it I say no. No matter how fans hate it it helped pave the way for that run to begin with. I love Hal Jordan as both a Green Lantern and Parallax. He’s my favorite Green Lantern as much as Barry Allen is my Flash. Come on, people ya gotta recognize plot threads to begin with. And I am referring to the fans who hate the story. It’s your opinion I respect. Yes, it was rushed at the time. But, what else were the Green Lantern Franchise going to do? Enable Hal to handpick a sub set of altruists to determine which Green Lantern is real or not, which was the initial pitch by then GL Writer Gerard Jones. Nope, you need a major mega event to garner back interest. So, to whom it may concern of their disposition toward Emerald Twilight it’s a significant arc that created perhaps the finest run in GL History. Also, Ron Marx’s GL Run isn’t that bad either. I mean guys we got Kyle Rayner out of this. Did you really think we would get him without Emerald Twilight? That’s a question you need to ask yourselves and also how much of a blessing Emerald Twilight is to the GL Mythos. Without it there is no Geoff Johns run. Period. Front and center.
Luckily Geoff Johns put him back together better than ever.
Ah yes. I am not a big DC fan, but the green lantern corp(Hal Jordan especially) have always been a standout from DC alongside the flash and blue beetle families. This story of Jordan's fall, sacrifice and redemption is just…phenomenal and one of the best from DC imo!
Even after all that Hal is still my favorite greenlantern and I grew up watching John Stewart.
Can you also touch on the flash Barry Allen and Wally West?
Kyle has always been my favourite Lantern and character. Excellent video
I've read comics since the 80s. Kyle is my favorite Lantern by a country mile. This is my absolute favorite GL storyline. The "Girls in refrigerators" trope was started by a woman who sucked at writing and wanted to make waves in order to get themselves jobs.
Death of Superman, The breaking of the Bat, and Emerald twilight, peak 90's entertainment. Have loved your DC coverage but would love to hear what you have to say about Frank Miller or Ann Nocenti's Daredevil runs.
Why is it that no matter how many times the universe gets reset, the lanterns seem to remember getting killed by Hal? I may just be remember Blackest Night but I feel that in the new 52 or rebirth prior to the dearh metal memory merge, everyone was hostile towards him.
