Elon Musk Directly INSPECTED Booster 12 βRAPTOR Engine WARPEDβ & declared thisβ¦
SpaceX achieved a groundbreaking engineering feat on Sunday with the fifth test flight of the massive Starship rocket, followed by the boosterβs return to the launch pad in Texas using mechanical arms just seven minutes later. However, as we observed, some of the Raptor engines on Super Heavy B12 encountered issues while landing in position for the catch. How did Elon Musk explain this?
Letβs break it down in todayβs episode of Alpha Tech:
Was that fire caused by Super Heavyβs Raptor engines?
If you closely followed SpaceXβs Starship Flight 5, especially the remarkable landing of the Super Heavy, you might have noticed the fire at the bottom of the booster around T+06:32, which intensified at T+06:39. The flames were clearly visible in the engine bay, raising concerns that there might be an issue with Starshipβs engines. However, that was not the case.

During the entire 7-minute flight from liftoff, all 33 Raptor engines operated flawlessly. None of the engines shut down unexpectedly, as seen in previous launches, and none failed to restart. In fact, they executed both shutdown and restart procedures smoothly and efficiently.
The moment when Booster 12 used three Raptor 2 engines to precisely redirect itself toward the catching tower was breathtaking. The process was 100% smooth and precise. Not just one or twoβthree engines worked together in perfect synchronization, delivering rhythmic, controlled movement. The accuracy of the thrust vectoring and gimbal systems was extraordinary, allowing the booster to perform complex maneuvers with grace and fluidity.

The motion was so controlled that it almost felt like watching CGI-rendered animationβa testament to the real-world precision required for such feats. This demonstrates the systemβs impressive ability to finely adjust thrust for delicate, high-stakes maneuvers.
Of course, we canβt overlook the role of βMechazilla,β SpaceXβs catching tower. The tower and its chopstick arms were thoroughly tested for stability, even at the top, where they bore significant pressure. Post-launch images revealed that Booster 12 still contained nearly 500 tons of fuel. To put that into perspective, the chopstick arms had to support the equivalent of 80 African elephants, 16 train cars, or three fully grown blue whales, each weighing around 200 tons.
Yet, the catch appeared incredibly gentle, with hardly any visible vibration. This smoothness was due to the new design of the chopstick arms, which SpaceX equipped with bumper pads featuring high elasticity. These pads helped slow down Super Heavy and absorb its inertia, making the catch look effortless. A slow-motion close-up even shows how well the 16 bumper pads performed during this crucial moment.

I still believe that B12 banged into the Zizilla.
Really great reporting, @AlphaTech. Your vocal qualities do not take away from the context of your content. Very professional.
Congratulations ALPHA TECH 100K, I've been here since 20k
Elon ABSOLUTELY IS the modern day Nikola Tesla, Wernher von Braun and gamer troll all wrapped into one.
His understanding of "things" is absolutely impressive.
When Trump becomes the president again Elon will get his Nobel. He should have got it already from inventing the electric car. But Dems hate him but now that he has made a biggest invention since when rockets were invented no one canβt deny he is a genius. Now even if they continue to cancel him Trump will give the Nobel to him.
Elon (points): "What's that bit do?"
Engineer: "That's a rocket boss"
I would love to see them refurbish the booster and launch it again. Their company value would shoot up ten fold if successful.
πππ Itβs weight is higher , so it falls fasterπ
So Elon copied the Russian tech from years ago and you lot go ballistic for it (ballisticβ¦rocket pun)
Let me guess Elon is going to call out any issues, then if an engineer (you know the ones who actually invent stuff) calls him out he will have a full on twitter rant about the engineer.
He will probably bring up some race theory, call out a government and look like a total racist dickhead in doing soβ¦βbut itβs free speechβ π₯±
500t of fuel =
80 African elephants
60 train cars
3 fully grown blue whale
I don't understand these units, can you please update how many washing machines or Big Mac's that is? Freedom units. Merica
Massively Cool
Elon made nasa look like a bunch of clowns. GOD bless him
Just tell us what he declared in the title or description. Why do people make videos and withhold information. Makes me not want to watch.
Will the next IFT booster test include Raptor 2 or Raptor 3 engines? Just wondering if SpaceX was wanting to utilize the engines already built versus using the new iteration in early flight testing.
33 is a holy number
why…they continue to tell us "as you can see" the smoothness of touchdown on the ….bla di bla…
No!
I can't.
We can't.
Not one camera shows THAT ecxact moment.
why??
And now the engines are fascist.
well …..that is alot of fricken torque and heat and stress….i would warp :-)— i still that was pretty damn impressive …. look nasa … nasa gets 60 million tax dollars A DAY ..then another 60 million the next day .. and next day and next day ….and what 75yrs later and i dont think ive ever seen NASA do that …….???? anyways i thought it was pretty cool
WTF i mean problems will happen
Exactly he is not an engineer
Compression – not friction.
Mars in two years π
Could do with these engines pointing at the small boats coming into the UK every day
human settlement in mars before 2050,Elon is smart because until 2040 the poles might shift ,humanity reset
Musk is MVP of the century
With Donald Trump and Elon Musk, the great America is back
No part is the best part approach!!! π
the descent speed of any rocket, no matter how much it weighs, is the same π
The evolution from raptor 1 to 3 is truly amazing. Some pretty smart people working for SpaceX.
3:09 Why are you talking out your ass? You're literally just making things up.
2:13 The Chopstick arms had to support the equivalent of 80 african elephants, 16 train cars or 3 fully grown blue whales – Further proof that you Americas REALLY will use anything other than the Metric system… imperial measurement system for that matter too ……. π€¦ββ
We witnessed history.
Very curious how they solve this. I guess they need some way to release heat out of the cluster. A series of holes or openings around the edge
Funny how the head of Chinese program started criticizing this launch not realizing the loss of heat shields was actually an evaluation process. And all the can do is copy Space X badly
Raptor 3 compared to Raptor 1's in the background. Yeah, we don't need these 5,000 parts.
Heat resistant I would think because it's the same color as the bottom of the ship
Black paint on engine bell makes it a thermal black body facilitating radiating of engine bell heat which is a challenge at rarified altitudes.
An aerospace engineer at Boeing is rethinking their career
10min, repeating the same info. Dont waste your time ππππππππππππππππππππππππ
It seems imposible, but they did it, amazing congratulations to all the PhDs involved in the project.
