Elon Musk declared “Starship Flight 3 reach orbit with NEW 33 engines”…
“So Flight, Flight 2 actually almost made it to orbit”. “I think we’ve got a really good shot of reaching orbit with Flight 3”.
These were the very bold statements of Elon Musk in a recent presentation. But you know, Elon himself admitted that getting to space is easy but getting to orbit is a hundred times harder.
So in today’s episode of Great SpaceX, we will find out why Starship reaching orbit is so difficult and why Elon Musk is much more confident to reach orbit with Starship Flight 3.

  1. Second test launch showed clearly that Starship project has serious conceptual problems.
Starship did not manage to get orbital speed, but its tanks were near empty, though flying without payload whatsoever.
Adding promised payload mass of 100+ Tons and the picture looks pretty gloomy.
Even when they started with SS-1 testing, calculations showed that things are not soo bright with the Delta V to reach the orbit.
Since then they had to add more empty mass to achieve this beer can´s structural strenght and integrity.
Maybe, just maybe there is some reason why all space rockets were built using complex materials not just an Iron.
Maybe there is something to do with strenght/weight ratio.
Maybe beer cans are not suitable for space flights at all.

  2. My understanding is that SpaceX has yet to try to get Starship to orbit. They are targeting just short of orbit to avoid the risk of adding to the existing clutter in orbit. Also, to the best of my knowledge, we have yet to learn what happened to the IFT2 Starship, the booster is believed to be an issue with the venting of propellant; but nothing yet on the second stage.

  3. Musk has been putting rockets into orbit for 10 years, including taking astronauts to and from the ISS. He put his personal vehicle in orbit, not around Earth, but around MARS! It's just this new rocket hasn't yet. It's only had 2 flights and the 2nd would have succeeded if it had a payload. 3rd time will be the charm.

  4. Let’s hope IFT3 comes to fruition early on in February, and multiple additional missions follow in short order throughout the remainder of 2024. The only way to meet those goals of attaining the Moon and Mars are by flying and testing as often as possible.
