Elite Dangerous Odyssey 1 YEAR later

After a year of release Elite Dangerous Odyssey, it’s time to take a look and see what has changed, improved, gotten worse and more. On 19th may 2021 Frontier developments released to the public the “next era”, “biggest update” paid DLC/expansion for 2014 game Elite Dangerous. With horrible launch it was not looking good, as gameplay, content, even company’s communication was sub-par to say the least. SO 1 year later : how is it?!

  1. Elite was my favorite game when I released on Xbox one. And has slowly pushed me away by making the things I care about more difficult and less fun to the point that I can't enjoy the game anymore. Now would try to go back if the fix the performance. But without that I have to keep waiting…

  2. You see, I really only play the Odyssey upgraded version of Horizons. I very rarely do any foot based content. The new graphics appear very well done, the planets more realistic than in previous versions of the game and I'm loving it. Perhaps I ought to attempt more foot based gameplay, I enjoy walking around my carrier and the star ports but I have always been poor in shoot 'em up play.
I'm afraid the negative response is what is killing the game, loved killing the Thargoids, real combat there!

  3. I miss the magic. My first diamondback explorer, my time with the fuel rats, my first time in VR, my trip to Sag*A and Colonia with my friend – which took us 10 real life days.

1280 hours. I miss the magic.

  4. Согласен по всем пунктам! Но мне кажется, что есть ещё шанс на восстановление. Думаю, ещё год у разработчиков точно есть, и если игра за это время не преобразиться – то конец!:(

  5. If Frontier really wants to make tons of money they should follow a more proven model: charge people 10x more money for pretend space ships and release 10x poorer quality software. Seems to work well for CIG…

  6. Thanks for saving me money but more importantly, time. I miss Elite but I do not miss Frontier and this debacle looks like it won't be improving. I guess I'm done as a player and can say 800 hours or more is fine with me for what I paid. Frontier still sucks, though. I won't be buying from them again.

  7. I'm in the cohort of people who didn't care about space legs in the first place. I'd be fine if this entire expansion didn't exist and they had focused instead on adding more depth to Horizon. The fact that apparently they didn't even make something that people who WANTED space legs like is depressing.

  8. I always hear people saying that Elites players dropped you know below a certain average or whatever but you're they're also looking at a page that says Elite dangerous not Elite dangerous Odyssey they're two different pages okay look at the elite dangerous Odyssey page it might read something different I haven't personally so I don't know but that's just something I'm pointing out cuz that's something I see in all the videos

  9. It's especially sad for Horizons too because of what Odyssey has also done was taken dump on Horizons by splitting up the playerbase. Over a year ago Horizons still had a reasonable amount of other players in which to interact with and now it's a graveyard.

  10. about the no man's sky dream… people really often forgot that NMS was a VERY small team that released an overhyped overpriced game. so they made a LOT of money. so the devteam was way bigger after release.. thats a very uncomon thing. generaly devteam shrink after release they don't expand. so NMS is a very unique case and people need to stop to dream about that "NMS redemption arc" it won't happen with big devteam.

  11. The Odyssey update finished ED in my view. Their lack of support all round for platforms including VR made it a no brainer, ED was dead and Frontier were clutching at straws. Anything they do now would be just polishing a turd in my view now unless they introduce player owned stations you can deploy anywhere in the galaxy at a cost of course, let players expand out the galaxy and inhabit it, it's not like there isn't enough room to do it considering it has over 400 billion stars.

It also doesn't help that DB himself is a bit of a drifter when it come to ideas, he starts an idea and rarely follows through. Elite 4 was slated to be released way back in the late 90's with a web page promising it as well. Instead of developing it to provide income for ED and having ED as Elite 5, they just shelved it for years and this is what we got. DB went off on one of his dream states hoping that mobile gaming was the next big income generator. Elite, the game that the entire company was built on, (hence FRONTIER name was still kept), could take a back seat. With someone like that in charge, it's no real surprise ED is flailing to keep its head above water.

I just hope someone releases the server code to open source if they finally turn them off, without it to make private servers, there is no game, not even a solo offline mode we were promised in the KS launch, again another broken promise by DB.
