I think the gungan gods were factions of the Kwa. This is based on the gungans having life debts, something seen in many cultures onces ruled by Rakata and the Rakata possibly learned the concept from the Kwa who introduced them to the galaxy. Maybe there is or was an infinity gate on Naboo.
Gungans get an unfair reputation; they wanted Jar-Jar dead, after all! And if you buy into the "Darth Jar-Jar Theory," well, that just makes things even better.

The original JarJar, before the movie, was him being a great warrior whose less-than-rigid behavior got him exiled… like the Wookie epic battle that became an Ewok cute-fest for kids by the time it went to being in movie form… JarJar Binx became a comic relief oaf. We all should have seen Lucas planning to sell his Star Wars franchise. Han firing second in his meeting with Greedo in later releases of Star Wars: A New Hope… when Han was still a pragmatic scumbag. Han shot first. The original idea was him to shoot and kill Jabba the Hutt, a really fat human crime lord in that scene but let's get back to what made it to the movie, the Greedo scene that I was introduced to Han Solo. I saw that on the big screen and was really mad that they killed Han's redemption and character arch by making him good from the get-go and surviving by sheer luck that the guy with a gun on him, a seasoned criminal, missed. Jesus f^cking Chr^st! C3P0's personality was originally based upon the New Jersey type used car salesman as well as being a total a-hole, kicking R2D2 during the desert trek and calling him a useless trash can. 3P0 evolving from that would have been great, but the kid-friendly mutation was to make him a wuss-o-zoid.
I could go on, but you get the idea. Only in hindsight, we can see Lucas planned to sell to Disney by cramming kid-friendly absurdities into Star Wars.
The statues of the elder heads, with the tree roots wrapped around them, recalls the Buddha head in the tree at Ayuthaya, in Thailand.
I really like how the Gungans have this whole world building backstory to them. It just shows that the species shouldn’t be unfairly judged just because of one prominent member everyone hates.
