Elden Ring is like Dark Souls, but more. More scale, more options, more accessibility. God damn, it is good!

  1. I'm only up to godrick, where i got stuck but i've had a great time wandering around the first area and exploring while I beef up my levels and gear a bit to have another go at him

  2. – Just say "from FS" 🤷
    – I agree. Open-world is okay sometimes and can be entertaining, but most of the time, it's tedious and annoying, it leads to confusion over what to do and how to proceed, and wastes your time. But that's the point isn't it? They have ZERO respect for players' time and want players to spend as much of their lives in a single game as possible. 😠

  3. I checkout out for a little bit, coincidentally as you were going very public with your transitioning etc etc, and I've gotta say you sound so… happy? Content? Like you've come into your own and I fucking love it. You're being you, unbridled, unfettered, and free, and it's the most attractive thing there is when it comes to the niche YouTube content I love.

Thank you for being you, thank you for continuing to put yourself out there and, honestly, helping me confront some of my own biases and prejudices. You've been a diamond in the rough since I was first shown your video on violence in video games (the one with the senator) and the power of that video, of what YouTube content can be, still resonates with me today.

I can wax rhapsodic your praises, but honestly, just thanks.

  4. Wow for the first time I am in complete disagreement.
The open world is totally unnecessary and doesn’t add anything the large areas they had already. A series renown for their secrets are now just spread through areas 10 times larger than even the biggest area in previous games. Maybe pay attention that 70% of the time in the open world you are just running or riding. They repeat assets all the time; ruins, villages, shacks, catacombs, graveyard, wildlife, encampments, a keeps, watch towers, the ‘nomad merchants’, mines etc. it is not ‘handcrafted’ it is copy pasted and color swapped. If you seen it in the first area I haven’t seen any variety to that in 40 hours traveling to 7 regions. Further they are reusing concepts from the previous games it doesn’t just feel like well worm tropes now it is just laziness and lacking creativity. The only good parts are the legacy dungeons which actually do feel handcrafted and vast…but then again why the open world with nothing to do in it? At least if they shrunk the open world 30-50% I would say it would only improve the experience.
They geared the equipment to include high levels in multiple stats to use so you will have or grind levels to use better equipment/ spells. And enemies/bosses give even less experience than DS1 so again you will have to grind a lot. Only work around is going to a region and just finding the associated mine to kill a few people or run through and grab upgrade materials since upgrading your weapons is more important to having a fair fight with enemies. Also you’ll see what level they expect you to be 5+, 10+, 15+ etc. it is absolutely transparent how they designed it.
Also the bugs are truly a shame. The normally associate open world bugs should not be present because they have not towns, villages, cities. The is no dynamic day night cycle they are just lighting states that you can see shift abruptly. AI is only enemies and they have the same patrol pathing from all Souls games or just static positions. Just a handful of static NPCs, they don’t even interact with each other when standing 5 feet away from each other in the isolated hub area. Had the game crash regularly, stuttering all the time, inputs read wrong or multiple times (sometimes at the same time), randomly gone to windowed from full screen, had enemies disappear right in front of me while fighting, fallen through the world, assets not load in, pop in in full view of player even on max settings, animations speeds lowered when there are like more than 5 enemies on screen, runes missing in the thousands when picking up from death, had a weapon not being able to upgrade even though I had all the upgrade material (finally just randomly fixed itself after resetting the game and computer a couple times)
Honestly it is the most disappointing FromSoft release in awhile that they took a fun 20-30 hour experience and smeared it across a dead open world with nothing additional you wouldn’t already do in a Souls game and make everything a grind so that it is going to be 90-120 hours.
