Everything you need to know about getting the best performance out of Elden Ring. Updated to patch 1.02 we’d hoped to see a boost to frame-rates over the network test – though in reality it remains a sub-60fps experience on PS5, Series X and S, regardless of mode. That said, Tom and John explain the best workarounds for each console, for achieving a smoother experience.

Thanks for telling us about the ps4pro version. I was using a lot this way for lower input lag on fighting games on ps5. I can play smooth 60 with no grass late texture loading and in general texture loading while riding torrent.
Playing PS4 back compatible version on ps5, smooth as silk and no complaints. Although I am still hoping they'll come up with some kind of a patch for PS5 if people complain enough.
I have been playing PS4 version on PS5 which feels great at 60 fps but also feels bad……
I can back the fact that playing on the Series X on a VRR display works great. The PS5 isn’t awful by any means, I can just tell that something is off the entire time I’m playing it and it is bothersome. I chose to play on the Series X because of that VRR support. Fortunately, the PS5 is getting a VRR update this month which will put it on par with the Series X. I’m hoping FromSoftware releases a patch for this as soon as they can. Clearly millions of people adore this game and are going to dump hundreds or even thousands of hours into this game. I absolutely love the game. It is fantastic in every way, except for the performance issues and the constant pop-in which is quite distracting at times.
If the last gen version were available to current gen purchasers, I could imagine Devs saying "if you don't like the frame rate, just revert to the last gen version." As opposed to fixing their current gen version.
Edit: I do appreciate your ps4 suggestion though! Very interesting.
this….. is simply awful…..
Xbox Series X drops badly into the 30's in the open world pretty much anytime it starts raining, and it doesnt drop for a few moments but literally it seems to run in the 30's almost the entire time its raining, and as soon as the rain stops the performance feels good again for the most part feeling as though its at least running 45fps most of the time of which feels pretty good with Vrr regardless how much it fluctuates between 45 to 60 although some areas in the open world feel as though its running in the 30's pretty often even without it raining, and its easy to know when the frame rate drops below 45 down into the 30's cause you can see it and feel it
Performance issues aside Elden Ring is one of the Absolute Greatest Games ive ever played as im about 50 hours in so far, and its just incredible as the depth of this game is amazing along with the visuals, etc as its a Wonderful Open World that looks absolutely stunning in so many areas as 90% of the Visuals are Top Notch at least on Series X, and i absolutely say its a 9.7 out of 10, and if they patch the performance for a solid 60fps the Game Will be a 10 of 10 all the Way hands Down its that damn Good
excitet for the ray tracing patch lmao
maybe 10fps on my 3080
Unacceptable dropped frames should have been fixed before they launched the game
this game runs like shit…how tf did anyone give it a 10/10
Finished the game today on the native PS5 app, was a great game, never experienced massive frame-drops. The only time i felt like the framerate dropped under 50 was sometimes when fast travelling a few seconds after loading
lol PS5 destroys XSX
Ps5 here , lots of fps drops and pop in constantly. Havnt played after the patch
I've been waiting for this one 🙂
Sony needs to get their shit together and prioritize VRR support already. Makes a big difference.
From needs to poach some good engineers and get a grip on the technology of actually making games. Their version of "bioware magic" is the inability to ever create an engine that is able to keep up with the frame time based combat their games are known for. They also need a difficulty slider for different elements kind of like accessibility options to ease players into their unique game play loop. Then more than like 5 percent of thr players will ever beat each game and in turn not be so intimidated by the difficulty and toxic (I'm not going to say those 2 awful words) community that make up the most vocal players online. I've been playing and beating games on every system since atari, yes I'm that old, and I cannot get anywhere in one of their games. The fact I own an oled with vrr support isn't going to make me any more likely to buy it and have it collect dust like alot of their other games I've bought and sunk tens of hours into hoping that it's me and not the game that makes them so intimidating. I believe their lack of talent as a whole some how (luckily for them) created this grassroots explosion being the souls-bourne genre. Sekiro for instance received game of the year on the sole fact that people who paid to play games for a living were part of the small percent to reach the end of the game. I love watching people play and looking at the art style but I've given up on them since Blood Bourne.
I’ve been playing on quality mode on series X with VRR and Freesync Premium Pro which has LFC (low framerate compensation) with the “premium” or “premium pro” versions of Freesync. All on a 4K monitor. Honestly love how the quality mode is uncapped. For me the higher resolution at around 40-50fps in quality mode is a lot better to play instead of 1440p at 60fps in performance mode. Again that’s just my opinion. Again, Could be due to the fact I’m using VRR And Freesync. I’m using the HDMI 2.1 LG27GP950B and it’s an amazing experience. If they could add some more stability patches in the future that would obviously be great. But as of right now I’m not complaining.
Okay guys? I get that they want to inform us about how these newer consoles perform but there are still many people that own the previous gen consoles while the newer ones are still hard to get at this time and play games like this on them! We’d like to know how they perform there as well!
Yet another game, yet another PS5 win. I always picture the pre-lease propaganda from Xbox about playing on the "most powerful system".
VRR aside. That's a software update. I don't care about it, nor do I have a VRR TV.
Old SDK? Is it why it runs well on OneX but so poorly on Series?
Wow, seems like this game has a lot of patching still needed to get it optimized. Good thing reviewers are so enamored with the game style.
Fromsoft in nutshell: great Team with genius ideas+ bad game engine and/or low technical competence.
But I will be still be buying their games for the foreseeable future.
Thanks. Great testing and commentary.
You don’t hear much about teraflops anymore do you…
Why don't you guys add the resolution to the graphic when you are showing the frame-rate comparison?
I would play this game if it was 25FPS. I couldn’t care less about the performance. I’m too busy dying.
It’s a freaking awesome game.
xbox can achieve 60 fps… when they stop porting from the PS5 version.
