Einstein mostly played while Marcia shared the results of his CT scan. He did talk a little toward the end. Einstein had a CT scan done on March 30th both as a preventative measure and because of an issue. We noticed that he started drooping his right wing when resting. Our regular vet was concerned that it could be a balance issue caused by either arthritis or arteriosclerosis. Blood work has shown slightly elevated triglycerides. Dr. Welle at Texas Avian & Exotic Hospital (https://texasavian.com/) Dr. Welle and his staff performed the scan and the results by Dr. Echols are explained in this video. Einstein passed the CT scan with “flying” colors! He is very a very healthy 25-year-old African Grey parrot!
The question, how can birds talk was asked, and here is the answer with a link to a video. Unlike humans, birds don’t use lips, larynx, or teeth to make a sound as they have none of these! Instead, they use a vocal device called the syrinx This is a muscular, y-shaped structure located at the base of the trachea (in the throat), where the windpipe meets the lungs. Each branch of the syrinx has a moveable valve, and the valves can work independently. This allows birds such as the parrot to be able to make very complex sounds, such as mimicking human speech (including letters like b or m) – even without lips! Einstein Parrot is a very talkative African Grey Parrot! He lives with us in our home in Texas and was hatched on June 15, 1997. Einstein is a silly, smart, and popular parrot who loves to talk and entertain! He is famous for his impression of Matthew McConaughey, (http://youtu.be/WecS9-3ISkk) NOT the “Einstein” that was featured on the TV show Animal Planet. He likes to talk on various “parrot approved areas” in our home, such as the kitchen drawer, the shower, kitchen chairs, napkin holders, and of course his play perches! Einstein has brought much joy to our lives, but training and living with a parrot requires time, patience, and sacrifice.
