EF-1 Tornado Hits Montebello, California – Mar. 22, 2023

A tornado touched down in Montebello Wednesday morning, tearing up the roofs on multiple industrial buildings, damaging cars and injuring at least one person.

Buildings were being evacuated in the area and an urban search-and-rescue team was dispatched to look for anyone potentially trapped in the wreckage.

The National Weather Service confirmed during a press conference that a tornado touched down in Montebello around 11:20 a.m.

Montebello fire officials say only one minor injury has been reported as a result of the tornado activity.

Inspectors checked 17 buildings in the area, and 11 of them have been red-tagged due to the damage suffered in the storm, according to the fire department.

The landspout – a type of weaker tornado that forms closer to the ground – hit in the 1200 block of South Vail Avenue. At least five buildings were displaying pieces of their roofs torn off or collapsed. Some of them were left with gaping holes in the roofs even as rain continued to fall sporadically in the area.

Gas and electric companies were called to the scene because of damage to utility lines.

Lived through Earthquakes 1973 Sylmar , Northridge 1994?, Malibu fires but never a tornado 🌪 Love and prayers to all involved. 🙏🏼

  2. We had a front that spawned 15 tornadoes statewide in a single night here in Oklahoma in February. That set an off season record for the State. I wonder what spring will bring us! Stay safe everybody!!!

  4. This is probably some of the best California tornado footage out their. While yes they do see about 7 per year most are weak and cause little damage if any at all and are probably nothing more than a mere dust whirl on the ground. Most people won’t see them though since California is a big state so they’d be far and wide between and happen in rural areas

  5. Thank you mr DC! You are literally the (your) "Daily Dose of Internet" of tornadoes. Even rarer than a Southern CA tornado, somebody actually recorded in landscape . My jaw dropped..! :O

  6. If climate change gets worse due to global warming, there will be more powerful tornadoes.
지구온난화로 기후변화가 더 심해지면 더 강력한 토네이도가 발생할 것입니다.

  7. I’m sorry, I know these people aren’t used to this kinda weather, but seriously…I grew up in Joplin, Mo. where the F 5 hit in 2011. We see this and we be like, “yeah, okay, let’s go to Sonic and get a cherry limeade.”
