By the time we found him, what remained of her face was clamped between his jaws. By then it was already too late. By 9pm on the 16th May 2001, V.W. had killed, mutilated and partially eaten his own mother. Or at least, some version of him had.

Ask any police officer, any psychiatrist or social worker and they will tell you not only that monsters do exist, but that the line between man and monster is a very thin one indeed. It is a line often blurred and one that is all too easily crossed.

The words above are taken from a diary entry, written by Thomas Chapel, a retired police detective who sadly passed away in 2023. The entry from which the words come from are part of a larger collection of papers which included copies of police reports, newspaper cuttings, eye witness accounts and documents from other institutions compiled by Chapel over several years but all relating to a single event.
