Ships vaporized into debris fields under the relentless barrage from the Drakari, alien warships with sleek, needle-like bodies, pulsing with a dull, malevolent red.
“How much longer can we hold out?” Elise asked, her voice steady but betraying the weight of the impossible decision she knew was looming. She was a veteran of countless battles, but none of this scale. None where the fate of her species teetered so close to extinction.
Lieutenant Marcus Caldwell, her second-in-command, hesitated for a moment before responding, his eyes glued to the tactical display. “Ten minutes, maybe less. We’ve already lost the *Liberty* and the *Horizon*. If the Drakari breach our line, Earth’s orbital defenses won’t stand a chance.”
The bridge crew worked feverishly around her, their faces drawn and pale. They had been fighting for days without rest, every moment filled with death and destruction. The *Vanguard*, once the pride of Earth’s fleet, now bore the scars of this brutal war—its hull breached in multiple places, engines sputtering, power reserves rapidly dwindling. Yet, it still fought.
Elise swallowed the growing knot of fear in her throat. There was no backup fleet waiting in the wings. The Earth was all but defenseless, relying on what remained of their orbital platforms and the battered fleet of human warships. The *Vanguard* was their final shield, and the Drakari were closing in fast.
