Dumb Decisions: The STUPIDEST FIELD GOAL in Monday Night Football HISTORY | Broncos/Seahawks (2022)

In week 1 of the 2022 NFL season between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks, on Monday Night Football, Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett had some of the worst clock management and decision making you’re ever going to see. With the Broncos trailing by 1 point with a minute left and all of their timeouts, Hackett did the unthinkable with his stupidity, completely costing his team the game in the process. This is a breakdown of that dumb decision

  1. Stupidest decision I ever saw was the naked, zero blockers, TE screen for a 15 yard loss the Cards drew up, the year before they hired Kingsbury & drafted Kyler.

Just a O line releasing for a screen but then not running anywhere to set up future blocks. A qb running backwards for his life, towards the endzone, throwing to a TE that was 15-10 yards behind the line, but had no blockers in front of him (you know, like in EVERY. SINGLE. SCREEN IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL) but then not able to even get back to the line of scrimmage because he was so far behind it when he caught the ball…. there were no blockers ahead of him, like a normal screen…. he was a TE, so even if you wanted him to make something out of nothing, this isn't CMC or Devante Adams we're talking about. The defense closed on him and tackled the poor guy for a loss.

That… is a dumb decision. And I'm not even an Arizona fan, but I'll remember that play until I die. I think it was week 5. Maybe week 4.

  2. I was in night classes at school for most of this game, but I got back in time to catch that entire fourth quarter. And the entire time, I thought "How in the hell are they losing this?". Then I saw Russel Wilson start slowly picking apart that defense and thought, "Okay, they'll come back and win it at the last second". BUT THEN THEY WENT FOR A 64-YARD FIELD GOAL! And I only had one word on my mind: "WHY!?"

  3. As a Bronco fan we are getting used to bad coaching decisions. Going for it on fourth when he should just kick the field goal, kicking the field goal when they should go for it. The Gordon fumble was avoidable because we could have took the points and trailed by 1, then the next field goal that got us to 16 would have put us up by 2 forcing the Seahawks to take risks on the following drive.

  4. The field goal attempt at the end of the game has gotten most of the attention, and yes, it was a spectacularly bad decision, but there is another play which bothers me almost as much. The play which led to the first goal line fumble. The Broncos had 4th and goal about six inches off the goal line and they hand off to a running back, out of the freakin' shotgun. Really? There are exactly two plays that make sense in that situation: The key is that the ball carrier has to get in there fast, to take advantage of the initial surge the o-line will get due simply to the reaction time of the defenders. The simplest way to accompilsh that is a quarterback sneak. The quarterback takes the ball and follows the line into the endzone. Just one exchange. The other way is a dive play to the running back. For this to be quick enough, the quarterback has to be under center, so that the running back is charging straight at the line when he takes the handoff. It's almost as quick as the sneak, but there is one more exchange, and if the crowd noise throws the timing off, it can fail. But handing off from the shotgun means the running back has to take a step sideways, take the handoff, and cut towards the line. It takes just a little bit longer than when the QB is under center, which gives the defense time to recover from that initial surge, and that's exactly what happened.

  5. Nate Hackett was the oc in Green Bay when they melted down on offense in the second half of those games in the playoffs. Of course as mentioned in the video we here in Jacksonville know all too well about Nate Hackett and his offense.

  6. Wilson 44% all time average on 4'th down conversion. To break down the analytics to this "exact" situation even more…..What do you think Wilson's 4'th down conversion is "within 5 yards" I can guarantee you without even looking that up…That percentage "Dramatically" increases!!! I would even go as far to say Wilson "Himself" has taken the ball "1 step" to pick up the first down well over 50%…. Coach has "Shit for Brains"

  7. If you want my honest opinion I think the Broncos made the right call! And I am not just saying that because I was born and raised in Seattle and a lifetime Seahawks fan! LOL

  8. The decision to kick the field goal was irrelevant to the outcome as they would not have converted on fourth and five. As usual, everyone focuses on the final play when the game had already been decided by what preceded it. Seattle's defense was outstanding and stopped the Broncos on virtually every clutch play in the game. Denver couldn't even score on TWO plays from the 1 yard line! That was the difference in the game but let's not let the facts get in the way of a "good story" when we can blame the rookie coach who "took Russ of the field". πŸ™„

  9. Yall are being too harsh. Chance of conversion on 4th and 5: 48%…. chance of making 50 yd FG: 65%. You need both to happen, so .65 X .48 = .31. Broncos coach just thought there was 31% of making a long FG. Seems reasonable to me. Peace out.

  10. I only saw the highlights. The Broncos looked in good shape, about mid field with the clock winding down. Imagine my surprise when the next highlight was them kicking an impossible FG and with TWO timeouts left!!! HUH?!?!?! πŸ˜‚
