I'm writing a scifi story on Reddit where humanity needs to take a planet without slaughtering the populace. There are multiple reasons for this decision but I have humanity using munitions that are non nuclear and with combat rules similar to Master of Orion and Sins of a Solar Empire strategy games. My invasion forces use the "Rods from God" concept for bunkers and shielded facilities and hypersonic glide vehicles for precise and low collateral damage targeting of defense batteries and mobile forces. The next phase is a drop pod invasion alongside strike craft at the pole of the planet. The most of the pods are building materials/decoys for establishing FOBs on the surface and the strike craft are there to establish air superiority and to defend the landing zones. Engineer vehicles are in the initial wave to build defensive turrets and walls around the landing site. The 2nd wave has drop pods/decoys and a factoryship for each landing site. Engineer vehicles break down the drop pods and bring them to the factory ship which starts building initial ground vehicle forces to defend the base. The 3rd phase sees drop pods with more personnell and larger components dropped to the landing sites. The drop pods themselves are capsules with their heatshields doubling as aerospike engines that use aero and propulsive breaking aided by a parachute at the end for sensitive components and personell. The factory ship deploys lifting aircraft to harvest the drop pods and their components to build the final machine. A land mobile factory of similar design to the Deserts of Kharak land carriers or the Supreme Commander UEF mobile factory. These are sent out to take ground and engage planetary defense forces. Mass infantry are sent in later drops to take certain military facilities or populated city centers. Whenever a carrier/factory needs more supplies, they would be either space or airdroped in the vicinity and lifters and engineer vehicles would bring the dropped materials to the land carrier. The tech level I have is that large ships can have shields but it's difficult to have beefy shields on smaller craft, it's supremely difficult to get large masses in and out of a planet's gravity from the surface (thus making inspace shipyards essential for large ship construction), and planetary shields are more torroidal than spherical. Phaser beams, ion blasters, missiles, and kinetics have their own strenghts and weaknesses against armor, shields, ammo, atmosphere and distance. Dropping separate components and then building/printing what you need on demand is what the US Marine Corps and DARPA are experimenting with out in the Pacific islands right now and it makes logistical and OpsSec sense because you decrease the risk of sensitive tech being captured and you aren't risking as many finished vehicles in the atmospheric entry phase. Plus this allows you to be flexible in your problem solving capabilities.
In Deathworlders, the HEAT (spec ops) drop in from orbit (which they call a HELLNO jump) using portable force field projectors that form invisible glider wings.
We've had a solid decade of demonstration for all the tech required to drop a squad of troops anywhere on the planet within two hours.
Virgin Galactic has the piggyback launch; NASA showed us autonomous shuttlecraft; Red Bull televised sub-orbital jumps… Then we got an official 'Space Force'
Drop pods don't make much sense to land troops, unless it strictly to land assault troops as soon as possible. I would go with a dropship having troops freefall from around 140,000 ft in specialized spacesuits (more advanced than what we have today) with steerable parachute packs. I believe that drop pods would be easily tracked for targeting by air defense systems or to determine their landing zone to alert forces to that area. Dropping troops from near space makes more sense and you don't have to land ships if the goal is to land on the planet undetected. Also, there is a lot of planning that goes into insertions from the air, so they don't happen randomly. It is very much an opportunistic tactic if the conditions support it.

Obvious question is, what could you do with Musk's Starship? How many would you send if you were landing in Baghdad or Jakarta? These would be single use, dropping in to airports, foot ball fields, etc. until you can re-fuel in a week or three. They could fly out to nearby carrier ships at sea. For what missions would this make sense? What would the mission look like? How many would be unmanned? These are real world questions.
A drop pod for just one soldier is done I would want at least 10 soldiers in it minimum at least 10 and all their equipment and I've got to be ready to fight when they go out the door and have to get their equipment off the outer side of it like grab the rifle they're going to go to keep the rifle and everything in the Pod 2

Sci fi planetary invasions are looking less and less realistic now that we're seeing it's practically impossible to invade another nation and win in modern times… The only viable strategy seems to be total annihilation from space or some kind of diplomatic / commercial subterfuge.

As per using nukes as anti-aircraft, they did tests for it in the cold war and the radiation wasn't an issue for the people on the ground as the detonations we're at a high altitude.
The radiation also wasn't a problem because they weren't salted bombs so the radiation was completely dissipated in minutes to hours.
The idea was only dropped because ICBMs became a thing and the idea was for shooting down fleets of bombers.
It's sad that the Halo series is never given any love here.
Never any talk of, or comparisons to, the ODSTs', or their drop pods, both the normal space and SF space ones.
Never any talk of the AI equip MJOLNIR.
Never any comparisons to covenant orbital bombardment or any of their offensive and defensive weapons system…

My counterpoint to the idea that planets ARENT defenseless is that while it is true that you can expect defensive installlations like rail guns to be on par or superior to those of the attacking fleet, those installations have a major weakness. It is the same weakness that most artillery pieces and bunkers today have. They are immobile. The planet may be moving, true, however it’s course is predictable. The course of a ship at the limits of its firing range may not be. This is one of the primary reasons there has been a shift towards self propelled artillery as it can fire, exposing its position, and then move before a counter strike reaches it.

Actually, in Chinese, the term for aircraft carrier, "航空母舰", literally means flight mothership.
When it comes to the question of "Do we send in the Marines? Or just nuke the place from orbit?", you need to remember: "What is the objective?" If your objective is to smash and grab adversarial politicians and force capitulation, then you send in a small ground team. If your goal is to capture a space port, or something vital to your war effect, you send in a larger force. If there's absolutely nothing on the planet that has any strategic value… you bypass it. You can drop a couple nukes on it if they have something they can use against you, and just do so repeatedly if needed, but if the planet isn't important… why waste any resources on it?

I am both surprised and disappointed that you did not even mention the man who pioneered the concept of drop ships and the Mobile Infantry, Robert Heinlein. His novel, Starship Troopers, was a fantastic political and social exploration of why society as a group wages war and individuals fight on behalf of the group/society. The military concepts were very advanced for the time in which it was written (1959). The movie sucked beyond all measure. The book was completely misinterpreted, horribly screen written, amateurishly acted and if there were any military consultants used, they probably all committed suicide once they saw the end result. I can't believe Ginny approved that piece of diarrhea, but maybe she needed the money. I'm certain Bob would have been pissed.
