I think we also need to take into account of that era when games like def jam came out, a lot of us kids would get most of our games second hand from places like video stores or used from GameStop. Those sales numbers definitely don't reflect the actual playerbase of the game

Tbh, I think live action One-Piece is actually damn good, considering.
It's probably the closest we are ever going to get to a 1 for 1 adaptation, because most anime (especially shonen) won't translate well to the expectations of the fanbase.
The biggest hurdle with the fanbase, imo, is deciding which arcs to skip. Unless you give an exact 1 for 1, you are going to either piss off someone, or give bait to the content creators that dont necessarily have a problem with it, but SALIVATE at the prospect of things to nitpick about in their inevitable dissertations on why everyone should hate it.
