Dr Lex Fridman: Navigating Conflict, Finding Purpose & Maintaining Drive | Huberman Lab Podcast #100

My guest this episode is Lex Fridman, Ph.D., a Research Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute for Technology (MIT), an expert on artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, and the host of the Lex Fridman Podcast. We discuss Lex’s recent trip to the heart of the Ukrainian-Russian War, geopolitics, perspectives on people living in war zones, the shared human experience, and how information is communicated and controlled. As an experienced podcaster and public educator, Dr. Fridman offers unique insights into the art of holding conversations that grow understanding, especially when they involve people with opposing viewpoints. We also discuss the peer-review process for scientific research publications and how social media and podcasts are evolving the way science and technology are communicated. We consider how to find and follow your life’s purpose, maintain ongoing motivation and implement support systems to build and sustain momentum. Our conversation also covers capitalism, masculinity, chess and cheating, Lex’s idea for an AI robotics start-up and a Q&A from audience questions solicited on social media. As one of the main inspirations for the Huberman Lab podcast, hosting Dr. Fridman for this special centennial episode was an honor and a pleasure!

  1. Dr. Huberman-have you done an episode on grief ? I try to catch all your content and don’t think I have seen anything on how to navigate grief and what is happening in the body during the grief process. I lost my son 1 month ago (adult son with mental illness). I don’t know how to recover and have motivation for life and for working towards better health as I did before my son died. I like what I learn from you because when I can understand what is happening inside my body and understand the science it is so helpful. Thank you for all your hard work on each episode of Huberman Lab Podcast.

  2. Lex your thinking way too hard about starting a company. Just start by building a mvp. You could probably even do it in your lab with grad students and then spin it into a start up.

  3. Hey Andrew – im following you for years now; thank you and your team for your blessed work. And I've been wondering – you strongly suggest exposure to sunlight in the first hours of the day, and If remember correctly, you said that the upper side of our vision field should be exposed to sunlight.
My question is if wearing a baseball cap all day long may affect the ability of our brain to observe sunlight?

  4. It's great that the world is "standing by" Ukraine, but to me it just boils down to "world against Russia". Because nothing happens for a good will you know, everyone just going for their benefits and now the world just teaches Russia a lesson… And it's very painful to realize this…

  5. I cant help it in making a comment regarding the new normal in wich death it is a common thing, although we live in citys and in the age of technology people are still used to kill in order to have a meal, maybe in a different manner (paying for that piece of meat, therefore the killing to occure) but the act of killing has not changed, in this context the transition to death amongst the people around us is just the expanding of killings and deaths around, instead of love and genuine care… the rush for money has win in some casses even the human souls, this is not a comment wich can be done short, my point is that I truly understand the neuroplasticity of the ukrainians and their ability to have a decent talk at dinner with AK next to the fork, this is an accomplishment of the modern life, we humans somehow managed to fight, cry and care with the same ease, in some casses in a different and unique manner, war does not solves the humanity issues but it helps in growing whealth amongst the ones who allready have the power, and as always the bills are payed by the majority, the "general public".
This episode was not only a surprise, was not just a cookie… but one with the best ingredients, a healthy piece of truth !
Thank you for sharing science and i dare to say part of yourselfs ! Thanks, hugs and kisses !
