Ok, i need to spell this out really clearly, because i know some folks are gonna jump the gun. If you have a big collection of games, you are playing them, and you can manage that. This video isn't about you or for you. I really don't need to hear you defensively tell me how you actually play your 300 game collection and how dare i suggest that buying all the games all the time might not be the way to go. If you are having fun with that, all good. This isn't a video for you.
I know this is video is for board games but for me personally it applies to video games as well.
I sold some of my games which I bought and never really played and removed a lot of games that were on my wish list. I really don't need to buy and play every "must-have".
Yea I needed to hear this
Thank you so much. I once had quite a large collection with massiv Kickstarter games. The majority i never played. It took a life changing event and two years to sell 95% percent. Even the last 5% i haven't really played all of them… over the last weeks i startet coming back on youtube watching videos and buying new games. You just opened my eyes! Thank you so much!
Some people horde boardgames that they either seldom play or not at all. What's the point? Last week we played Monopoly and had fun playing it. It brought back memories.
We live in a world where everywhere you go, social media, television, advertisements, and so on are always in your face brainwashing you into becoming a consumer and it’s easy for it to become a endless cycle of buying things you don’t need but want for that quick rush of happiness but living a conservative lifestyle is so much more fulfilling and I’ve learned that over the years but it’s still tough to resist spending money admittedly.
Great video and a fantastic message for many things not just board games.
Just came upon this! Been in and out of board game obsession. I probably about once every two years will start watching board game content. I think it’s crazy when people are talking about just needing novelty in their experience. It feels like this is especially a euro trap that folks sometimes think they are solely competing with games and not people, and when you hve that mindset you get to discarding games quicker than if you think “hey I’m gonna beat my wife in lost cities the 4th time this week” and waiting for her to pull out the win.
I rarely buy games, and just play on BGA.
This is a fantastic video. So many of us should hear this. Thank you.
I'm in the process of culling down a 250+ game collection because it just takes up more space than is justified by the time I get out of them.
I reckon I'll cut it down by about 50% which is still… A lot of games!
Glad someone made this video.
I really appreciate this video. I especially liked what you said about games not being a one time experience. They can be played lots of times and create great memories for years to come 😊. Our Dominion collection has been played dozens of times. I'm sure there are other "better" deck builders out there, but this is the one we like playing. And I can appreciate and play the other without needing to buy each of them.
I like to think of our collection as the core games that we love and would be happy to play in each of the genres we enjoy. That being said, it's still a lot, so i appreciate the reminder haha
I’d concider myself a hard core board game fan, and I have my collection of about 15 games collected through the years. And I agree with this video. There are always many new games I’d love to try out. But I think it’s important to not forget about the games you already own. There are still so many hours of fun left in the «few» games I already own. So squeeze as much as you can out of the games in your collection!😄
Thanks for the great video before watching this video just 10 minutes ago I purchased 5 more board games when I probably have over 100 new games you are so right. I promise to my self not to purchase another game this entire year instead play all my games. Keep the great content coming. 🎉
I was introduced to board games by a group of people that aren't very "plugged in". Every friend had about 3 board games they absolutely loved and they'd take turns playing them weekly. They only seemed to buy new games after trying them a few times.
I, unfortunately, got sucked in by the barrage of exciting "reviews". I love game design, so I like learning about all sorts of games. Started earning a salary which fed my consumerist engine. Bought lots of big and expensive games that I never got to play.
I quickly realised that I was confusing the desire to play games with the desire to buy games. Started selling most of the games I wasn't playing, and got involved in a local club. I'm still envious of the group I started out with and hope to find a similar group one day.
Thanks for the important reminder – big fan of your work!
Great message. We're a culture of consumerists believing that buying one more thing will some how fulfil us. 'Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
So true. I have just flogged off 5 games with a couple more to go. It leaves me with about 20 games. Most are heavy and need several goes to really explore their scope. (1862, arkwright Hannibal and Hamilcar included). A mate has just acquired the war of the ring and stuff like twilight struggle, blood rage and 1960 amongst a few others. When I put the games up for sale I was instantly considering what I would get to replace them. Since most a currently difficult to get it made me pause. I have now switched a bit wanting to play what I have, several times and really dig into them and I can’t wait to do it! Long live the older stuff!
I gave a lot of thought about having a manageable collection this year. As 2024 started I stopped buying new games and decided to cull about 25 games. I want to have mostly games I love to play over and over again and discover new games through my friends.
Which game? 😂😂😂
Great advice! I don't understand the controversy
One missing point here is board game clubs, which hit two birds with one stone. You get access to maybe 20 extra people's worth of board game collections, and you get to make friends with maybe 20 new people because you'll be attending the same club week after week. I've board gamed with different clubs for 7 years now, including university societies, and the variety of attendees means I can play a crunchy, low variance endurance game – say, 18xx or Pax Pamir, or a game from twenty years ago that I'd otherwise not know exists, without having to own them – or even know about them more than 5 minutes in advance of playing them.
