We got so close to Mars. First, we sent our robots there. Then, first humans landed and started the colony. Red planet base became the pinnacle of human creation and ingenuity. 5 billion years of evolution led us to this glorious moment of setting our feet to the alien planet. We almost became two planet species. Almost.
Sometimes I think 5 more years and we would be the first interplanetary species in our solar system and, perhaps, the entire Milky Way galaxy. What is 5 years compared to 5 billion years? Blink of an eye.
And we blinked. In the middle of the 2020s quality life of an average human was better than Roman or Chinese Emperor 2,000 years ago. Yet, it was also the time when we unleashed the first horseman of the apocalypse. The plague. Even though humans tried to calm themselves that it was done either by accident or by natural cause, it was not the case because the last 2,000 years of mankind’s history is the story of wars and destruction. And so the second horseman of the apocalypse was unleashed again. Like centuries ago the Roman Empire collapse had a domino effect on the entire world. This time the world consumed by greed and envy collapsed as well and it had a domino effect on Mars that we just started to colonize.
The final global war caused the famine and the third horseman was released to end mankind once and for all. Now it was not just any war for resources and riches like oil, lithium and gold like before. It was the war for survival: for water to drink, clean air to breeze and land that was not affected by massive nuclear fallouts and produced countless mutants.
