  1. Some differences may occur within each of the two dollar store (Dollar Tree) razors. I have tried both of these. The TTO style one was serviceable but still not very good. The three-piece razor was not able to give a serviceable shave. Bad blade angle! The head does not curve the blade nor bend the blade for the edge to be at any good position nor angle. A FEW people had reported the TTO one to be okay; but not for you or me.

  2. The Assured is often confused with a Weishi 9306 (the Wilkinson TTO for example is a rebranded Weishi 9306-P, Van Der Hagen is a rebrandend 9306 F/C/H, FL/CL/HL respectively, for the long version) – but it's not.
There are a few Weishi knock-offs from China which itself is of course a Super Speed knock-off.

The 3-piece with the plastic handle has a Tech-style head obviously. Also many knocks-offs around.

The Gillette "Super Blue" out of China (available on AE) and the Gillette "7 O`CLOCK Sterling" from India (see Mr Razor) are genuine Gillette products with the same Tech style head and plastic handle – technically they are "Tech" razors. Both are really decent, mild shavers.

  3. I bought the three piece from the dollar store and have not been brave enough to try it. I tried a dollar store (Assured) blade and chucked it half way through the first pass. Now I will probably not try it. Thanks for taking one for the team…

  4. Always keep this in mind, whenever you're shaving with a DE blade, you ain't only taking hair off of your face but skin too, to some extent. So make sure you are in control of the blade's maneuvering.

  5. Thanks for taking one for the team! Whew. Glad you stopped using them. It seemed uncomfortable from the first stroke. Every once in a while I like to use Babersol or Gillette Foamy, for nostalgic reasons, but find them both very dry compared to all my other soaps. I did find, putting Proraso pre shave on before each pass, helps a lot. Cheers and have a good week.

  6. Dollar Store shave videos always bring this Irish sea shanty to mind. We sang this at Summer Camp in my childhood.

Canned foam, no name Chinese blades, and a rock bottom cost DE razor… what could go wrong?

The Rolls Razor is essentially a straight razor on a stick with a very rudimentary "safety bar". The stone and strop built into the kit can do a fair job of maintaining the blade, but really isn't up to the task of putting an edge on a blade that has not been maintained. The strop was intended to have paste applied to it. The Mad Scientist of Wet Shaving did a video on this kit several years ago on YT, as have a few others.

The Rolls Razor and the similar Darwin Razor are favored in the prepper community as SHTF razors because the blades are high quality and permanent. The Wilkinson Sword 7 day kit might be an even better fit for a post apocalyptic wet shaver.

  7. The only good thing about both of those razors is the baseplates are pliable. I bent them to reduce the blade gap and got them tuned to shave great for my preferences! Not sure how long they will last but make for a great travel razor that I won't be sad if I lose.

  8. Second comment, sorry. I vote yes on the Rolls Razor. I have one that was my Grandfather’s, and a new NOS one. I also bought a NOS blade. I have not yet had the courage to try one of them, but I would love to see you take that on. Maybe also show how you end up with a shaving sharp blade. Thanks…
