  4. Hey Buddy! Sorry about the missiles but I was there when Ike Dbl Greenlighted Phantom. It had provision for missiles, but only had 2-50s under each wing for max time at target. Kelly apologized for not standing up to the Missile Freaks, building it w/o guns!! I believe that declaration is all the condolence the many Fliers lost needlessly get, plus missin' out on the extra destruction they coulda given enemy! Ike truthin' when said, "Beware of Military Industrial Complex" in farewell speech!! Dad had name on parking spot at his place & I dragged along when 3 when he was offered all intel on USSR everything proposed, building, or active for 15G. Dad no spy, but Ruskie who woulda been KIA w/both brothers taking Berlin as battle much worse than that shown on videos! After War, he rose in Intelligence there, & when obtained above intel, snuck it to Dad in appreciation! All Dad had done was, when Ike Supreme Commander informed of Krout & Jap A-Bomb development, he had "Small Bird" get message to Dad. "Must end War yesterday"! In 1st Army, Dad w/BAR & Ammo Carrier charged last few miles to Bridge at Remagen bumming ammo & grenades all the way. Couple enemy dead donated rain ponchos, they slipped in behind 2,000 man+ German Army, repeatedly shot rear corners off formation until discovered w/about 160 left, exiting to RR Tunnel at far end. Dad repelled 3 counterattacks & as spoke German his 1st language better that they did, he intimidated hell out of 'em! Rest of 1st Army 2 hrs late as informed entire bridge mined, so dragg-ed de feet staying on "safe side". Dad's BAR melted, Carrier shot thru chest, few grenades left, but basically down to twice liberated 7.62X25 Russian Tokarev Pistol and foul slurs in German. When 1st Army LT snuck up behind Dad, he demanded to know name, unit, where his weapon was, and what was he doing screwin' up their attack!! Some yahoo named Sherman had blown hell out of far right tower's deck w/Dad stripping mines couple hours before LT, so made decision SGT should capture Dad as "Enemy Infiltrator"? Dad yelled to Prisoners in tunnel to "drop weapons, come out w/hands up, & I personally guarantee your safety". They came filin' out & it was all 2 SGT's w/Tommy Guns could do to stop this turkey from clearing them, as LT had killed no one, & bridge taken without loss of G.I….so a rather poor showing. LT radioed in & GEN of 1st Army Hoge ordered G2's Crisis Actors & film crew brought up to show how 1st Army takes a bridge! Carrier spared as Krout machine gun bullet had missed heart, lungs, ribs, etc & Dad's battle dressings had held so met him in '54 showin' off his scars at reunion!! Dad given different story as "Enemy Infiltrator" to be shot at dawn. Just as Hoge finished his Execution Order, Ike ruined his day with call making sure Buddy (Dad) taken care of. Hoge didn't recognize Dad, even though had loaned him to Ike & Monte training D-Day troops, as butched up by tank's main gun. Hoge such stoner, Ike had to ask 'em if Buddy's wounds tended to, Buddy fed, new uniform, Distinguished Service Cross, new BAR, etc! Hoge could only answer to negative, so Ike furious! Hoge explained didn't want to waste resources on Prisoner to be shot, which made Ike angrier yet! Ike yelling so loud everyone in HQ could hear & upon hang-up of receiver, Hoge took Dad in tow to Officers' Mess w/Doctors fixin' Buddy as eating. The 6 squads used at point were "free" from Omaha Beach Survivors Dad had patched up w/captured field hospital. Add Farmer's house for place, his Wife Nurse, and Dr. Buddy, they patched, sewed, set, etc, so on 8th day when 1st Army Armored came by, Dad returned + Capt welcomed 6 new squads, all with automatic weapons….wasn't that lucky? Anyways, Hoge had Driver drop Dad off at bridgehead, and immediately the other Germans went home!!

Sorry what they did to the F4 Phantom, as my favorite too! Only one I ever flew when Kelly sent test plane over, WITH DEFECTIVE TEST PILOT! He flew over Lk. Superior up to FL50 doing his aerobatics & all, but started chokin', then pukin' in mask, & golly gee we was out of Pilots w/me just kid 13. I dive non-bombed base we had gassed up at, did every trick in and out of book, alit on foote, hvy brakes, popped chutes, more hvy brakes swerving balance of runway w/reversers, stopping w/6 foot to spare on 12,000' runway. Medical right there as requested, fishing out, "Puke Queen", & off to Infirmary, although both tires blew scared 'em. Fire/Rescue put out tire fires, but before I could say word they zoomed off to their Ready Stations. I knew in big trouble breakin' Kelly Johnson's favorite plane and best Test Pilot, so remained very quiet. COL in charge of base asked how got plane back, and nobody knew. Refueler from morning was there, so said had kid in rear when gassed. COL immediately PO'd so started for runway, and shortly peering over edge of seat, then asked if Pilot was about? I explained Pilot sick at around FL48, so brought him in for repairs. He asked if wanted down from there, and I replied wanted down more than anything, but when asked speed of dive, I replied, "I'm sorry…that's Classified, Sir". COL said that was correct answer, got me on ground within a minute, and eatin' ice cream with him within five!! Kelly raging mad, so said only thing he'd approve might be redesign of Officers Mess silverware! Two days later came down with Flu, and it was test pilot strain as dang near kilt me!! After 3 weeks, Kelly called back. He said I was rehired if wanted the job, Test Pilot fully recovered, Phantom just needed new special tires, new chutes, bunch of new plates already in works, and of course new brakes. I asked about a deep clean for the interior, and he said, "And yes deep clean on interior". He said all the bracing & frame measurements same, so she'll be as good as new! Kelly said there was, "One little thing", and that was no USAF jets to be up with teen pilot, FROM NOW ON, per Secr of Defense. He also said COL at Bomber Base put problem I faced on USAF Flight Simulators, everybody's tryin' to match it, but take too long and Test Pilot dies, OR in terrible heavy fatal crash. Kelly specified that if asked, I was to say, "Kelly personally taught me how to fly"!….Oh did I remember to tell you, Kelly Johnson of Lockheed Skunkworks taught me how to fly??

  5. I was there doing a different job and we heard the fleet scuttlebutt and we were too dependent on the missile technology. Many wanted guns back on them through we heard some had the 20mm on them but we're elsewhere as usual. We listened to some of the chatter when some of this was going on but don't remember much of it now. There is no question by then we dominate the sky everywhere over there. And the lads all wanted to get migs and we wanted them to wipe them out now that we were up north. But politics always seems to rule even then

  6. Who the hell made the decision not to put guns on the F-4 Phantom. Oh, we're in the missile age now, let's just arm them with 4 missiles, even though the probability of two or 3 won't work.! Great work engineers.!

  7. I remember all of this as I was there on the USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) on May 10, 1972. If you see an "NL" on the tail of of the aircraft it was from the Coral Sea. I was with Marine All Weather Attack Squadron 224 as we deployed aboard the USS Coral Sea back in November of 1971. I remember the day we lost an aircrew, Lt. Joseph McDonald (Pilot) and Capt. David. B. Williams (BN – Bombardier/Navigator) on May 3, 1972, which was a very sad day for our squadron. I lost some friends in Vietnam. We also lost our Wing Commander (CAG-15 which is Commander Air Group, Commander Dunlop as he lead a strike force against a bridge in North Vietnam. Cheers from Sgt. W Rusty Lane USMC 1969 – 1973; Vietnam '71-'71
