This is not right… It shouldn’t be this way…

Let me tell you the top 3 things I love about Irwin ♥️:
1️⃣ Neutral and friendly during 7 dog tests and in the yard + kennel with neighboring dogs
2️⃣ Treat motivated while gently taking treats
3️⃣ His confidence has grown. Of course, this has taken time, patience, and understanding

☹️ Poor, handsome Irwin arrived at SASA experiencing fear and confusion. When I first visited his kennel in March, he would stay on the opposite side, appearing stiff and frightened. With patience and consistent kennel side visits, Irwin built the courage to come over for treats.
After some familiarity, I invited myself into his kennel. While he remained on the opposite side, I patiently sat there offering treats to continue gaining his trust. Sudden, even small movements would cause Irwin to retreat back to the opposite side of the kennel. When petting him, he would freeze up not understanding what was happening. When in the yard, he would keep his distance, often running away from me. 💔
⏩ Fast forward to these last few weeks, Irwin shows his excitement when he sees me. It makes my heart burst to watch his progress and earn his trust. When I hang out in his kennel, he sniffs and licks me. He’ll even nudge me with his nose because he wants treats. 🤣
In the yard, I give him the space that he needs and let him come up to me on his own terms. What’s awesome to watch is Irwin having the courage to approach other volunteers and handlers. Because Irwin is skeptical of humans, it makes guess that he has little interaction or experienced neglect and abuse in his previous home. 😔
🚨 Irwin REALLY needs our help to save his life; he does not deserve to die. Because of his timidness and lack of trust with humans, he is overlooked. With time, patience, decompression, and love, Irwin will be a great companion. Once you win him over, he’s an easy-going, sweet soul.
📝 Shelter notes: NO SMALL DOGS OR CATS! Dog has a high prey drive for small animals. Easy to leash and walk to the yards, allows all over touch but can be reactive to other dogs in neighboring yards. Experience handler needed!
☝️‼️ I want to address the shelter notes above. These were likely added when Irwin first arrived at SASA. I have spent nearly 1.5 months with him and have not seen any reactivity to other dogs. I’ve asked other volunteers if they’ve witnessed or heard about this and they said no.
Irwin did wonderful in numerous dog-to-dog tests. He has a calm demeanor, is friendly, knows how to greet other dogs, and responded well to me when giving commands and praises.

🦴 Walks great on leash! Suggest basic obedience training

  1. I called and left a message. Hopefully they return my call asap. I’m located in Georgia, USA. I’m not rich, but can foster/possibly adopt this beautiful soul. He will have a fenced in backyard to play in with my spaded 6year old female Belgian Malinois/Pitbull mix. The only help I would need is help with transportation from California to Georgia. Thank you for doing what you do. You have a big heart!

  9. I am posting this after the date of the scheduled time, and I desperately hope that this dog found a home. There is no reason to euthanize a perfectly healthy dog, especially one that young. I already am at max capacity of animals in my home, but someone can and will take him. Don't put him down because you are impatient to find a home.
